An Arto Detour

I always used to assume all the good toys came from the far East, but lately i'm thinking all the coolest stuff comes from a lot closer to the arctic circle! Once more Arto at Helsinki Base astounds us with an amazing little item, which provides an interesting diversion from the usual hard core space toy. Arto sent us these photos of a tin plate illustrated with the east german cult animated figures called the Sandmännchen. Nestled behind the plate are three drink coasters too. The intetesting thing for me is the fact that the little chap is sat in a russian Lunochod based vehicle! Arto also found a link to several space based episodes!

  1. He may have elf like powers but nothing is going to save him from that junky piece of Soviet space vehicle. I wouldn't get on one of their transit buses let alone anything that goes into space.

  2. Beautiful find Arto. Wonder if the little saucers were for sand! ha ha! Must be great living in a capital city, so much going on and so many treasures like this to unearth! The Sandmaenchen was very popular in East Germany [hence the Russian coonection] and still popular in the united Germany. There are now Kinder figures of the little fellow. Just had a look on Ebay.de and there's loads of Sandmeanchen stuff like this cool vintage wooden money box from the old DDR: http://www.ebay.de/itm/original-DDR-Fernseher-Sparbuchse-Sandmann-Sandmannchen-Sprelacard-/300887187860?_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14835%26meid%3D6942058968415132807%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1073%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D160812477077%26
