Dinky Shado 2

The Dinky Shado 2 Mobile came out in 1971 and went through a few changes before Dinky ended production in 1979.

Mine was bought in 1971 and has a green body and roof, brown rollers and grey tracks. Sadly the box has long gone.

The next versions all had black tracks with green rollers followed by black rollers. The roof was eventually changed to black, and the body colour changed to blue.

The last version had a curious combination of four large drive wheels and eight small middle wheels.

The only gimmick was the missile launcher which was concealed in the flip-over roof.

Here's some pictures showing some of the variations and in particular the wheel arrangement.

  1. Mine has the plain roof, no grilles. I think that was the first version.

  2. Another Dinky classic. I wonder if the moulds were destroyed?

  3. That's a question, Yorkie. Do we know what happened to all the moulds and spare parts etc. when Dinky went bust?

I''ve seen the odd flat roof version on ebay, Kevin. I'm sure you're right about it being the first version. I imagine Dinky changed it, as without the grills giving ithe roof added strength some might be prone to bending and not lining up right.

  4. I have one of these beauties. When I get home tonight I will have to count the wheels.

Then I will stat this baby up on the FATE SF blog. :)

  5. They all have 12 wheels in total , John. The last version has the inaccurate wheel arrangement . On each side the two end wheels are large and the four in the middle are small.

Shade 2 is certainly is one of my favourites.

  10. I've wanted one of these since a friend brought one to school in Kindergarten. I've finally got one but it's missing the missle/rocket. Is there any way to tell what color reproduction I should get? Mine is green with green wheels and black tracks. It has slotted head screws holding it together.

  11. Hi Malcolm, I have asked around and here is what friends and colleagues think [the consensus is Yellow Missile with Black Top] but here's all the responses so you can see for yourself:

    1. Yellow missile with black top

    2. However, here's one in a brighter green with a yellow (gold?) missile with red tip on it?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301039815585 which is also shown in Dinky cataloges (#10-12) here: http://www.isoshado.org/6/6_merchandise_archivio/spec_feat_dinky_print.htm
(though Dinky catalogues aren't always accurate). But then catalogue #13 has a black tip.
So perhaps both red and black tips will be okay?

    3. It is the same design as used in FAB 1 and the SPV. From memory the green mobile had a missile with a white body and red rubber nose cone.

  13. Back in the 80's I spent some time collecting EVERY variation available, got most of them - all the different colour seats (blue, red, white, yellow and the rare cream colour). First two issued had flat roof in either black or green.

    1. If it looks like the last photo with the four smaller middle wheels and the two larger drive wheels, yes.
