Its very unusual to see new iterations of SWORD advertising appear, but sharp eyed Andy B has just sent me this cool full page ad from TV Tornado in 1967. Its clearly one of the earlier ads which have been cut and pasted into a larger page format, the previous ones tended to be half page. But it does appear at a very poignant moment after Mike b pointed out the presence of the full 'Project SWORD' decal placement which appears on the Apollo rocket and on the Nuclear ferry exclusively. All other known toys have the standard SWORD 'dart' only.
There is another half page ad around somewhere that I am anxious to find a clear copy of, it appeared in a copy of Buster in 1968 and features the booster rocket, very prominently, using a monochrome version of the art from the annual. If anyone has a copy of that to scan, id be very grateful!
Notice on this ad that the Saturn rocket seems to be based on thTomy version with blue upper stage and the ferry is clearly drawn from a prototype. The radar scanners on the cargo pod are reversed and the connecting rod on the far side seems to have detached and is resting beneath the fuselage. The motor drive is little more than a block of wood and the wheels look like model aircraft ones for rubber band powered planes. The passenger section is more elaborate, but not faithful to the final toy.
ReplyDeleteAmazing Andy! New finds like this are the reason why I set the blog up in '08. I shall have to get hold of a copy of that comic. Thanks for sharing and Wore, thanks for posting.
