Wonder of Wonder Car

Andy B sent me some example recently, of the different ways that the Mole was treated by various artists. In amongst the examples was one by Ron Turner. Turner is easily one of my two favourite comic artists, up there with Mike Noble. His illustration of the Mole recalled another Turner strip in the british comic weekly, Whizzer and Chips. This was Wonder Car, a series about a bunch of kids who come by an amazing transforming vehicle (cant remember how they come by it!) and go on all sorts of missions, finding out more and more of the cars special abilities as they go on. The car had a two pronged front and I remember stories where the from became two large drills, allowing the car to tunnel under the earth. The strip was always printed in duotone, black and cyan, so i still imagine the Wondercar as being a flashy electric blue in real life!

Turner also did fabulous artwork for the Daleks strip and the odd piece for 2000ad, especially on the Judge Dredd War of the Robots strip. "Call me Kenneth! Death to the fleshy ones!"

  1. I always loved the Whizzers of Oz car from The Topper comic. Anyone else remember it?
