What's the best Sci-Fi film and/or series you've ever seen? For me the film would have to be a toss-up between Alien and Star Wars and the series would be Star Trek, the original series.
Film(s) 1st Place: Star Wars Trilogy Episodes IV, V, & VI - original cut 2nd Place: Star Trek Trilogy: Wrath of Khan, Search For Spock, Voyage Home TV Series 1st Place: Star Trek 2nd Place: Rocky Jones Space Ranger (1953) Did you know that the concept of the 'tractor beam' (on TV that is) originated here and that they had a cloaking device which they called Cold Light - which looked an awful lot like a reverse osmosis water filter - which operated BY PLUGGING INTO A WALL SOCKET!! OMG LLMAO. The more I watch these old episodes the more they intrigue me. great blogging material.
1/ Anything BUT Alien or Star Wars! 2/ The Thing, 2001, This Island Earth all contenders.
Yes, 2001 raised the bar for SF films. Circa '68-'75 was a golden age ("Silver Age") for SF films. And then Star Wars, Alien and Close Encounters came and kicked that bar down to the ground. Thank goodness for videos and DVDs!
I am frankly surprised at all the fans of old-school, vintage SF toys and models on this blog that nonetheless like post-Star Wars SF garbage! They are as different species to me.
Original Star Trek for a series...and must say personally 'Forbidden Planet' seemed to hit all the chords with me as a kid; GREAT colors, sets and effects! Still enjoy it today with a bowl of popcorn. Always secrety wished that Leslie Nielsen had done a cameo with fellow Canadian, Shatner on the TREK.
Must say I do have a soft spot for Forbidden Planet - I suppose it was 2001 for the fifties - and Star Trek's biggest inspiration also thinking about it I'm sure George Lucas would have pinched a few ideas from it along with every other sci-fi movie prior to Star Wars. ; D

ReplyDeleteWhile I wouldn't say I had an overall favourite TV sci-fi show, I did like UFO, and would have loved to have seen a proper second season.
Film: possibly This Island Earth.
