Fellow Star Trek fans: On April 23, 2010, Spock visited 'home', or
rather his Earth home of Vulcan, Alberta (Canada) to dedicate this
bronze bust of Spock during their annual 'Spock Days' festival.
Vulcan
is a small town on the Canadian prairie which I have been to many times
(mostly stopping for fuel). The name of the town (early 1900's named
after the Roman deity) was not lost on them and like so many small towns
across North America searching for a tourist attraction (ie. Giant
Easter Egg -seen in X-Files, World's Largest Ball of Yarn, etc.) they
found the 'logical' solution.
I have often stopped to admire the
enormous 'Enterprise' sculpture and now have even more reason to stop
and see the bronze bust of Spock (the Vulcan salute hand print on the
sculpture apparently is enlarged version of Leonard Nimoy's own).

That's a really great looking Enterprise. It wouldn't last a week here in Southport before being vandalised. We had a small bronze sculpture of Dan Dare in the town provided by the Eagle society for everyone to enjoy until some *#$@! bent his cap peak. Now it's tucked away in the local art college library.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool thing to have in the town! I love that Enterprise too! You know, looking at Spock's head reminds me totally of Captain Lazer's head! Did Mattel base it on Spock?
ReplyDeleteI recall that this (powder-coated) Enterprise was made by a local/town Fabricator & Welding shop; it must weigh a ton! I wonder what it cost and if the blueprints required sign-off by Paramount. Spock's look is so iconic (especially his visage in the original series), I wouldn't be surprised if he inspired some of the Captain Lazer look.
ReplyDeleteActually the ship is a Vulcan transport vessel. The similarity in design is due to the fact that the Vulcans helped humans master space travel and their design influence is apparent.
