LEGAL ALIENS?

Should Species be classed as part of the ALIEN film canon? HR Giger did design the Sil creature, which is distinctly xenomorphic like our acid-blooded friend. Logically if Species were to be considered part of the canon does it follow that Species' three sequels, II, II and Awakening must also be?

The same question must be asked about Predator, but in reverse. A sort of prequel, Alien Vs. Predator or AVP [2004] brought the two creatures head to head, but we first saw a crossover in Predator 2, where, according to Wiki, we see an ALIEN skull on the Predator spaceship [anyone got a still of that?]. AVP spawned a sequel, AVP Requiem. The Predator franchise also includes Predator, Predator 2 and Predators.

The ALIEN movie canon proper is simple: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Obviously this will soon be added to by the eagerly awaited prequel PROMETHEUS, the film event of the year.

What do you think of the ALIEN movie mythos. Are Species and Predator in? Did any of the toy lines cross over?

  1. AVP left an ALIEN Queen swimming around in our ocean...was thinking perhaps she'd set up shop in the Titanic and lure James Cameron back for another round :p. I'm a hopeless fan of both Alien & Predator franchises and your inclusion of Species' Sil makes sense to me; could easily be a branch/relative of the ALIEN organism.

  2. Personally, i wouldnt add the Species to the mix, aside from Gigers design influence, theres no real connection. Species was just a gore fest really and got worse as the series went on!
You can see an alien skull in Predator 2, when Lethal Weapon fellah gets into the ship at the end and finds all kinds of old weaponry and remains, theres a lareg alien skull just behind in in clear view. An alien skull also turns up in Hellboy too, in one of the glass cases in the BPD Hq. Aliens/Predator are a natural mix, sitting together quite naturally. The AVP Requiem sequel was another gore fest and light on plot, but Predators brought the series back to the main cadre and was actually a lot truer to the theme, knitting in with the first film rather well.

  3. Think Kenner made an Alien V predator two pack and the Galoob Action Fleet lines had a Predator ship in the Alien line, but its as rare as hens teeth to get hold of.

  4. There were crossover novels, in which hunting the Alien creatures was a rite of passage for young Predators wanting to prove what warriors they were.

  5. To add to WOTAN's toy list: Takara/Japan did a very detailed & highly articulated group of Aliens and Predators under their 3&3/4" MICROMAN line. Mcfarlane Toys had quite a run of Alien vs Predator toy/scenes. The last one I can think of are the HORRORCLIX ALIEN vs Predator boxed sets (nice detail in 35mm plastic gaming pieces). These would go well with some of those hard to find (and harder to pay for) Galoob ALIEN/Predator items mentioned.
