As well as watching cool TV shows after a game of War or Dolls back in the day we were also busy stuffing our faces with scrummy sweets and toffees from down the Penny Shop! Mmmm, yummy! So Swordies, same drill as before, to be considered Grand sweet Tooth please name JUST ONE of these old sweets and it's sticky number!
No 2. Flying Saucers. Yum
ReplyDeleteNo 4 looks like Sherbet, yum, yum
ReplyDeleteIs no.5 Pirate's Gold?
ReplyDeleteCry havoc! and let loose the dolls of war!
ReplyDeleteYep, all correct so far. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteMike, it's a particular kind of sherbert and was my favourite - it was quite tangy and began with K !?! Lavverly!
Pirates Gold is bang on Toad. Also known as Spanish Gold. These were brands of sweet tobacco. Deelicious!
And Flying Saucers. Papery body and zingy contents eh Yorkie!
Wonder if the others will be ID'd?
This is a tougher one, Woodsy. Half I don't recognise at all. Flying saucers I loved!
ReplyDeleteBut the ones I really remember were sweets like Black Jacks, White Mice, and those triple-coloured, rock-hard sherbet lollies on sticks. Can't remember the name of those (Swizzers? Swizzlers?) but, wowwwww! They were lovely. Once on holiday I put a pre-decimal penny in a slot machine and won something like two shillings ... and bought a WHOLE paper bag-full of them!
Sigh ... the days when I didn't have to worry about calories!
And there was a chewy sweet, half pink, half yellow ... think they came individually wrapped like Black jacks did. Now what were those? Super, that's for sure! I can recall the taste, but the name eludes me.
ReplyDeleteHey, Woodsy I can't think of a Sherbet beginning with K. Put me outs my tangy misery; )
ReplyDeleteNo 7. Are they pineapple chunks?
I think those half pink half yellow were Fruit Salads P.T.
ReplyDeleteIs thee thinking of kali, lad? But is THAT sherbet?
ReplyDeleteFruit Salads!!!!! Yes! yes! YES!! How could I have forgotten that? Senility, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mike. You can have a Black Jack for that (holds out paper bag).
Thanks P.T., Lovely, makes me tongue all black.
ReplyDelete7 looks like pinapple chunks?
ReplyDeleteSorry, see Mike has already said that!
ReplyDeleteYep, Kali it is. I've always classed it as part of the sherbert food group. Could be wrong!
ReplyDeleteAnd yep, Mike and Amdy, Pineapple Chunks they are! Yum yum yum!
So that just leaves 1,3,6 and 8!
And Toad, there's a sweet surprise on the blog for you!
1 are called Circus Peanuts in the States. Who knows what you Brits call them. You have such funny names for things. 6 are Gummies of some variety, but I don't recognize the shape. And whatever 8 are, I'm having a craving for them and I've never seen them before!
ReplyDelete(chokes on tea) Funny names? Us? That's codswallop!
ReplyDeleteMore or less the same here Richard - Sweet peanuts in the UK. I like the Circus peanuts name! hard, sticky and deelicious! Could do with a bag now!
ReplyDeleteAs for the missing numbers including 8, shall I put everyone out of their misery?
Put me out of my misery? You mean you're going to shoot me?
ReplyDeleteOK, wild stab in the dark ... a dark full of sugar-tasting goodness ... is No.3 Golfballs?
Such racy language, toad! Please, not in front of the crew!
ReplyDeleteI want to correct a partial mistake on my part. A little research informs me that "sweet peanuts" in the UK are peanut flavored (or flavoured) and while these certainly exist Stateside, it's actually more common for Circus Peanuts to be banana flavored. I'm not sure how that happened.
Is it possible 8 are some kind of mint? I've got a mental picture of a small dish of mints sitting next to the till as you leave a restaurant, and being allowed to take one as a reward for being a well-behaved child. I'm still well-behaved in restaurants to this day but do I get offered a butter mint? Hmph!
Banana flavoured sticky nuts! Wow! It's the stuff of Hugh Hefner's dreams! They do sound delicious, I gotta get some.
ReplyDeleteAnd yep, Toad, Golfballs is right. Chewing gum to be exact, in the shape of.
As for the mysterious number 8, it's the delicious confection known as Fruit Rock.
No-one's mentioned 6 yet! Think 2012!
(blush) Sorry, Richard, you're quite right. (smiles)
ReplyDeleteGolfballs was right? Wow! OK, so the clue is "think 2012" ... are you saying he No.6 sweets are called, "Oh no! Not another year of anxiety, drudgery and broken dreams"? Cos that's a really weird name for a sweet, and I suspect you're pulling my leg.
Give us another clue, please.
Another clue. Hmm. Wish I could just hand you one to taste through the screen! You buy a a bag full, they can be quite hard and need a lot of chewing and have fruity flavours. There's bikes, bats, rackets and balls. Must get some later!
ReplyDeletei think 6 is sports mixture
ReplyDeleteWell done Geotwin, you got it! Sports Mixture. Lion brand is best!
