Just half way through the old space movie OUTLAND with Sean Connery. Basically it's about a mining colony in space where mysterious suicides keep occurring and Connery, as the new space Marshall, must get to the bottom of them. The mine's boss, Peter Boyle, whom I love as an actor, thinks different! I love the feel of the film so far, very gritty, menacing and industrial. Bit like Alien without the ...er.....Alien! Anyone else seen it?
One of the most memorable scifiers of my youth, in the wake of Alien. In 1982, I travelled 200 km by train to another city where it premiered just to see it among the first.
ReplyDeleteIn the 80's there were U.S. mail order companies which sold 35 mm film frames taken from leftover prints. In my patch of Outland frames (which I had to have), there was this magnificent shot of one of the workers exploding inside his spacesuit. I thought it so cool (young as I was) that I had even a enlarged paper print made of it. So cool! (ehem...)
What a fabulous collection you have Arto! and 200Km to see a movie, that has to be a record! My next rental film ordered is Zardoz.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff Arto!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing "Outland" at the cinema and loving it. I have since seen it numerous times on the TV and on video.
Peter Boyle is a favourite of mine too, ever since I saw him in "The Friends Of Eddie Coyle" (with Robert Mitchum) and "Young Fronkensteen" of course lol.
Although not a huge Connery fan I thought he was excellent in this along with Frances Sternhagen as the grumpy doctor...she made it a great part!
Zaedoz...will look forward to your review of it Woodsy.
Long time since I saw "Outland", but it was really good. I've seen it called 'High Noon in Outer Space', as it is fairly similar to the classic Western, "High Noon".
ReplyDeleteGreat film and great cast.
Wow, that's dedication, Arto! I think this film was too adult to get much in the way of a toy line, too the best of my knowledge. Hope you liked the rest of the film...

Love outland, could easily be set in the same timeline as Alien. Only thing is it takes liberties with science and physics. When the dealer is isolated in the zero-g holding cell, floating in his space suit, Connery discovers he has been killed and see blood coming out of the airline to his suit - but the blood drips upward! If hes in a weightless environment, it should float in neat globes.. and then theres the ridiculously archaic use of pump action shotguns! Too High Noon for me. Love the music in the miners rec club though!
ReplyDeleteGreat to have you back Ed. We missed you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Woodsy,good to be back.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see the blog is flourishing...just catching up with all the great things I have been missing.
Warmest wishes as always.
Thanks Ed, glad to have you back. I thought Mr. Connery suited well for his role, too. Have to dig up a DVD to see the film again, it's been ages...
ReplyDeleteThanks Arto.
ReplyDeleteI love the scenes especially the early scenes, between Connery and Sternhagen...great dialogue, and funny!
Let me know what you think when you have watched it again.
