Hi Paul, was looking at the Pathe News reel on Frank Hampson (super stuff) and thought you and the readers might like to see a scratch built Dan Dare ‘Anastasia’ spaceship I built for the 1990 Eagle Exhibition in Southport. It’s based on the ‘Red Moon Mystery’ version of the craft which was the only reference I had at the time. The main body and wings are moulded from hardwood and the living quarters and blisters are vac – formed acetate. The model is around 13” long with a 14” wingspan.

Tremendous Mike!
ReplyDeleteWow. What skill.
ReplyDeleteMike, you know you're making me really envious of your skills now, don't you?
ReplyDeleteBTW, the ship design? Looks like the sort of craft a Toad might fly, eh? (grins)
ReplyDeleteThe Eagle comic used to have a double center page with cross-sectional schematics of locomotives, ships, planes, etc. One of them was a beautifully detailed schematic of Anastasia. Has anyone come across this?
ReplyDeleteThe Cut-away of Anastasia was in Vol.9 No.6 of the Eagle, published on 7 February 1958. I vividly remembered this picture from my childhood, and managed to buy a copy of the comic on ebay a few years ago. I can't remember how I worked out which edition I needed... probably Googled for it. I also scratch built a model of Anastasia, about half the size of Mike's and not as detailed as I hadn't got the cut-away at the time. Now I've retired perhaps I'll have another try...
