Dominic Halpin's fabulous Fireball XL5 swing tune posted this week got me thinking about other space combo's. There's some brilliant 1950's cosmic LP covers like the one above by the Ames Brothers over at LP Cover Lover. There's also a fang-tastic Monsters LP Gallery for fans like EvilEd and me. Don't forget to check the 'older entries' at the bottom of each page for more cool covers in each category. Anyone still listen to vinyl or have you upgraded your collection to CD or MP3?
'...the fastest guy alive' I loved that XL5 tune and all Barry Grays music. Always loved the end of Stingray too with that lurve triangle with Atlanta and Marina and the theme playing over the end. Cracking stuff.
ReplyDeleteYou know WOTE, thinking about TV shows has reminded of two kids' TV catchphrases we had back in the 60's. One was "Ah Oh Chongo", which I think was shouted on Danger Island on Saturday mornings [but why and by whom I've forgotten], which aired along with brilliant cartoons like Arabian Knights [Banana Splits?]. The other was "Geronimo", which we always shouted when we jumped down from anything! No idea where that came from!
ReplyDelete"Size of a [insert animal's name here]" from said Arabian Knights (loved that cartoon!).
ReplyDelete"Shazaam" from the cartoon of the same name (wasn't it?)
Transferred my LPs to the computer and made them into MP3s long ago.
THE BANANA SPLITS Season 1 DVD is out and pretty cheap now too. Dander Islad is on there complete too

The other ARABIAN KNIGHTS magic phrase was Rosan Kobar(Excuse spelling)How mad that this stuff sticks with middle aged blokes like us??

It's not just middle aged blokes, and it's not mad at all. Don't ever let anyone make you feel it's a sad thing to do ^_^ We're pattern-seeking creatures, and it is a good way to fix an idea in the mind, or a good way to share an idea. "Look, I'm saying this, so something is about to happen!" In a way, it goes waaaay back. When epic poetry was transmitted orally, it was common to use repeated descriptions and noun-phrases to describe actions and people so as to help "fix" the poems in memory. Think of Homer's "rosy fingered dawn". (That's the ancient Greek poet, guys, not the cartoon character. Doh!)
ReplyDeleteAnd I guess television advertising relies on it quite a lot. I can still remember the "Lip-smacking-thirst quenching" Pepsi adverts ... (and i have a memory like a ... erm ... you know .... one of those things used for straining, um, things you eat).
Other good sixties TV catchphrases:
"Wilma!!!!!"
"Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do!"
"Bubble-headed boobie!"
I often think things like the Thunderbirds launch sequences and the Angels' launch are visual ideas similar to the verbal ones we have been discussing.
ReplyDeleteAnother sixties catchphrase:
"When I say run ... run!"
And for the seventies we had, "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow ..."
and dont forget
ReplyDelete"shixty shix cents" by - I can't remember but he was a cartoon rodent!
and Foghorn Leghorn's "Boy, I say Boy"!
and who can forget the word ACME plastered across the boxes Wil E. Coyote had delivered for his countless plots to trap the Roadrunner! Beep Beep! Wonder if there is a company like ACME? Probably say Amazon if it was nowadays!
Aahhhh Foghorn Leghorn! He's hilarious. Remember the one where he tries to get the better of his genius nephew? They play hide-and-seek, and Foghorn hides behind a tree .... yet the nephew "finds" him in a storage bin. From behind the tree, a bewildered Foghorn talks to the screen ...
ReplyDelete"I'd look, I say I'd look .... but I might just find I'm in there!"
It's so surreal!
Wile E. Coyote has to be my all time hero! Its the look of puzzlement, defeat and sadness whenever he looks at the screen in realising he's about to get hurt again! I been there too, Wile E!
RE "visual ideas", for me, it is the beginning of Fireball XL5, with that dramatic music, closeups of the spaceship and takeoff -still brings a sense of excitement. I think it can be a positive link to the past.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, Andy! You are so right.
