Classic Lion Annual Covers from Andy B

Reader Andy B has sent in these fab 1950's Lion Annual Covers. I think you'll agree they are simply cool. There's shades of TB3, Scalecraft's Aerocar and a Star Wars AT-AT in here way before their time!
Cheers Andy!

  1. Great find. Before my time, but are the pics of the Captain Condor comic strip in Lion? Apparently the captain was a bit of a rip-off of Dan Dare. The 1954 annual ship looks like they've taken the canopy from Dare's Anastasia and put it on a spacefleet rocket. The 1955 annual rockets look like they're from the Flash Gordon strip of the 30s. Even the robots look very old fashioned even for the 50s (compared with Dare at least). The aerocar reminded me of my favourite super-car (Anderson pun intended) - the space car from the Whizzers of Oz strip in the Topper comic. Always wanted a toy of it and their super cool ray guns with the dial on top to change ray settings. Anyone else remember it?

  2. The pictures definitely relate to the Condor story in the annuals, although there may be some influence form Eagle and Dan Dare.
They were certainly more amateurish than Dan Dare, but I think they have a period charm!
