Although not the slightest bit interested in real life weaponry I was a kid brought up on water pistols, pop guns, cap guns and these 'sucker shooting' firearms. CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS was a show based almost entirely on the concept of conflict and death and destruction. (Although as was pointed out clearly in the opening scene of the first episode mankind brought the wrath of The Mysterons upon itself by ignorance and the classic 'shoot first ask questions later' way of thinking.) Aware through their close connection to the production company itself Century 21 Toys sold this same basic pistol toy in three forms. Along with this version they produced a water pistol version as well as a cap gun. All are closely representative of the pistol seen in the show although the more sturdy Lone Star created version differs dramatically. This target type toy was also produced in a similar format for the later show JOE 90.
i had the cap scarley water pistol, and the joe 90 set with the same accessories but different gun
ReplyDeleteThe J90 briefcase was just the best though! I got one of the Vivid remakes in the early 90's, sold it years later and regretted it ever since!
ReplyDeleteI will do a little bit on JOE 90 next if Paul wants. I can show the JOE 90 Crackshot set. The targets are actually plastic vehicles as opposed to outline shapes of Spectrum Captains so it differs dramatically to this one. Not conceptually of course as the old target gun set is,or was, a mainstay in the toy industry. In the interim check out a mate of mines site www.bigrat.co.uk. The merchandise section is top class.

I recall having this set, but my favourite Anderson-based gun was the Fireball XL5 water pistol, in white plastic with "steve zodiac" on the grip. It was a good copy of the gun as used in the TV series.
ReplyDeleteThat's right! That'll be the Fairylite Steve Zodiac Gun. Came ina bag with a header card. Bloody nice!
