I can't get enough of Dyna Soars! Tonight's summer extra is inspired by Mr. John Sisson's brilliant Dreams of Space blog, where he recently posted a fascinating piece about the Dyna Soar and Eagle comic. This got me thinking about whether Century 21 box artists were influenced by Eagle art maybe [anyone got any from the comic itself?]. In turn this led to me doing time-line gallery of all the Dyna Soar colour art that I'm aware of. Take a look above - click to enlarge. Having done all this Boeing's Warren McCallister 1961 painting still comes out as the earliest and still remains my prefered origin for the Century 21 box art and most likely all the other artwork that followed it.
All the above images can be seen in full in the collage below including source credits. I'm aware of early black and white Boeing Ad art [most likely McCallister] and some other colour Dyna Soar art like McCall's and Aerojet but they have small X-20's on top of Titans rather than the plane in flight like the one's I've centred on. I've also stopped at 1972 and discounted any modern images like those on the Anagrand Model Kit and Space Voyagers toys. I would however welcome any further X-20 art from the 1960's!
Here is another from 1962 (2nd illustration)

Hey John, thanks. That's another cool X20 drawing and an early one too! It amazes me that with all this Dyna Soar art around in the Sixties that there is only one X20 toy from that time.
