HOW AND WHY? WHO CARES, THEY WERE JUST FAB BOOKS!

A staple of my young library were the fab HOW AND WHY books. Above is the unforgettable back cover. My favourites were Dinosaurs, Prehistoric Mammals and Primitive Man [I wanted to be a paleontologist!]. Wish I'd had Rockets and Missiles and Planets and Interplanetary Space Flight!
What were your favourites?

  1. Oh wow, I remember these! I had WWI & II and sea shells and a mate had the Civil War, also I vaguely remember reading the space one at school, it had lots of your Sword'sqe stuff and a fair bit of NASA stuff a'la Brook Bond cards.

    'Zolot'...a 6'legged reptilian 'horse'.

  2. They were special weren't they Mav! I have ordered the Interplanetary Space one from Amazon. It's a later edition from the 70's [cheap!] but maybe all the great space art is only in the earlier issues?

Hee hee - I remember learning all the names of Dinosaurs from the How and Why book. Drove my family mad as I practised round the house saying Diplodocus [two ways of pronouncing it], Iguanadon and Dimetrodon and Plesiosaur! Good times! I still remember them all.

  3. Were those names in the Dinosaurs book broken up to make the pronunciation clear? Cos I recall a book like that - think it was How And Why.

Sort of like, DIP-LOD-DO-CUS, and, BRON-TO-SAW-RUS?
