Window on the Past

While looking for inspiration for my model making, I came across this wonderful photo from the Ontario Archives of Eatons Department store and a 1958 Xmas window display. It shows a load of Revell, Lindberg and Strombecker Space kits such as the Bomarc, Von Braun Rocket, Snark, Regulus and Nike missiles. Eatons have also made up larger versions of the Lindberg rocket and Moon Ship. Now why cant we lay hands on shots like this of sixties SWORD displays ?

NB: see also this cool site with lots of late fifties Lionel Train displays in Xmas windows - plus a rocket riding santa! http://scrantonchristmas.blogspot.com/

  1. Ooh, isn't that wonderful! Very nice, Wotan.

Are those wires on the left of the lower third of the picture? Were there working lights, perhaps flashing, as part of this display?

Any idea what the figures are displayed here? They put me in mind of those from the De Lux Toys Rocket Set

  2. i can see strings of xmas lights in the background, so its probable there were lots of lighting effects. I think the spacemen around the big Lindberg rocket are from the Archer Plastics range.

Really impressive! Thanks for posting. I can see one Archer Spaceman on right side of the photo. five or six space men in front of the large rocket are made by Premier Plastics. They are 7cm tall. Here is a pic: http://www.blechroboter.de/info/galerie/02c6959cd51159c13.html
