New Toys?

Won't it be great to see some new toys for the new movies UFO and Major Matt Mason! That's if they produce any. Anybody know the plan? This year? Then again, with the demise of Woolworths here in the UK, I'm not sure where I'll go to check them out whenever that may be. I suppose it'll mean Toys R Us. Are there still toy shops around in your town?

  1. Last year, Mattel launched a line of super-hero action figures based on the "World's Greatest Super Heroes" line of figures produced by Mego in the early Seventies. So far as I know, they've been selling like crazy. Adult collectors of about our age who remember the Mego figures from childhood are snapping these up.

Now, it seems to me if Mattel has found that selling faithful recreations of vintage toy lines to adult collectors is a lucrative area, a reissue of some vintage Matt Mason merchandise becomes a bit more conceivable -- regardless of any merchandise issued for a film. Not at toy store prices, perhaps, but certainly lower than a vintage figure would command. I have no inside knowledge here, I'm just saying it seems logical.

  2. Hey RAB, not sure if those re-issues were available here in the UK. I didn't have them as a kid either in the 60's but I've become very familiar with them years ago after buying Bill Breugman's wonderful book Toys of the Sixties and John Marshall's Super Hero Toys book. I've bought quite a few of the Batman and Robin figures at boot sales so I bet they were the most popular here in the UK. I've seen a 12 inch Mego Superman too at a boot fair. Cool figures and I can imagaine they are brilliant to collect!

  3. Yeah, I wasn't sure if they'd have been available in the UK but I figured you'd know of them! I should also have added: the Mego Museum at http://megomuseum.com/ is a good source of info on this topic.

  4. There's a toy shop in the mall here. And Modelzone stocks collectible figures and cars, as well as the kits you'd expect.
