I AM METAL MAN

Stepping forward from the line up of Spacemen in the Wotan Cabinet of Curiosities I Major Mercury, one of Zee Toys 'Metal Men' series. Made in the latter part of the seventies, this was a completely metal, jointed figure series, smae scale as a standard Gi Joe or Micronaut figure. There were a couple of military figures, Major Mercury, pictured above with Radon the robot and two other androids, Roton and Questar. I was lucky enough to find this complete Sears boxed set containing a range of accessories - all plastic - and the amazing Space Glider like ship and beautiful Space Saucer for Radon.

Major Mercury appears to be wearing a rather ill-fitting spacesuit and seems to be a little overweight for a spaceman! Articulation is very limited, but is offset by the unique look and feel of the figures, as they are quite solid and weighty.

Toy collectors site Bug Eyed Monster has a great article on the whole line here: http://www.bugeyedmonster.com/toys/metalman/

  1. I haven't seen Metal Man in almost 30 years. I hadtwo figures and the saucer. I remember that the seatbelt in the saucer was nothing more than a breadloaf twist-tie. I also remember how mad I was when I lost the orange spacesuit that came with the figures.
