Oddly enough I say either sticky taoe or sellotape myself, never Scotch Tape. Here's the link to that list! Airfix is on it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarksWOODSYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456645970983569001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2156181044707591026.post-78036385083986809032016-02-13T18:54:39.081+00:002016-02-13T18:54:39.081+00:00I think at one time (long ago) the main soft drink...I think at one time (long ago) the main soft drink available was ginger beer, so 'ginger' (or ginger pop) just sort of evolved onto a generic word for all later soft drinks. In much the same way that 'Coke' has become a generic word for all cola, or Sellotape (or Scotch tape) has come to represent all adhesive tapes. Jap Deserts (or maybe it's 'desserts', I dunno) are larger versions of the dice-shaped (or should that be 'die-shaped'?), different coloured sweets that you get in Dolly Mixtures.Kidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07224781868125924337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2156181044707591026.post-46175859818418007762016-02-13T09:42:34.324+00:002016-02-13T09:42:34.324+00:00Great memory Kid. I got a jar of 'retro' sweets at Xmas! Interesting that you called soft drinks Ginger. How come? and what are Jap Deserts?WOODSYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13456645970983569001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2156181044707591026.post-6310740204439813162016-02-12T11:25:02.694+00:002016-02-12T11:25:02.694+00:00There was one shop in my old neighbourhood, called...There was one shop in my old neighbourhood, called 'The Cafe' (the shop, not the neighbourhood), which was odd as it wasn't a cafe. It sold, sweets, ice cream and 'ginger' (soft drinks), and they had jars of sweets on the shelves near the back end of the shop. Candy Balls, Jap Deserts, Jelly Babies, Dolly Mixtures, Licorice Allsorts, etc., you name it, they had it. In later years, as an adult, and years after I'd moved from the area, I used to go along every Sunday and buy 2 ounces of Candy Balls because it reminded me of when I was a kid, reading the latest copy of Fantastic and sooking my (gotta be careful here) sweets (phew) as I did so. The shop lasted from the mid-'60s right up into the '90s, but is now something else, alas. Ironically, several years back, it WAS actually a cafe for a while (under new owners), but in my mind's eye, it'll always be as it was in the glorious days of my childhood.
