Rob's Atlantis Revell X-17 Research Missile

 Woodsy,

Here is my latest blast from the past, the Atlantis Models reissue of the X-17  test missile, originally produced by Revell in the late 1950s.

The actual X-17 was manufactured by Lockheed, designed to provide information on long-range ballistic missile re-entry issues. A three stage solid propellant hypersonic missile, the X-17 was introduced in 1954 and reached speeds of over 10,000 mph.

In 1958, several X-17s were used for Project Argus, which tested nuclear weapons detonated at high altitudes.

A very cool model from the “Cold War”!

  1. Stunning work as ever Rob. Revell did some really cool models back in the day, here in the U.K we only really had AIrfix as the main distributor, unless you went to special dealers. Bill

    1. Thanks much! It is so much fun to revisit some of these vintage kits from our childhood, and once I derailed myself from the current “mandatory skill set” of the modern model-builder, I could just have fun building it as I would have 50 years ago! SFZ

    1. It’s weird that so many models of that era were essentially “War Machines,” but there is a dark charm to all this military machinery. SFZ

Another stunning model, and an excellent paint finish. Perfectly matching the box art. Well done.

    1. Thanks, I really appreciate it. I did modify the colour scheme to my liking, because White is so boring! SFZ

  4. Excellent Cold War era model. It seemed that every model company back in the day had at least one rocket kit modeled after the real thing. I had the Revell Atlas with launch pad.

  5. It's nice to see a fully finished "out of the box" kit!
I'm always tempted to fiddle with things, but seeing one made as it was intended by the maker, reminds me of all those vintage catalogue photos!
-although it does look like one of those ground technicians has just been shot in the back!

    1. Yes! One of the crewmen had a big fat sinkhole in his chest, and as I don’t do sinkholes…. SFZ
