This image of monsters toppling a robot is one of the most striking sci-fi film stills Ive ever seen. It's so well staged, everything leaning perfectly like the Iwo Jima flag group and such an arresting shot from the old Soviet movie Planeta Bur.
The robot armour looks fabulously chunky and recalls completely the knights in the modern series Fallout.
And this space car! Wow! I've seen that before but where?
I've never watched this Soviet flick. Have you?

The space car resembles Supercar.
ReplyDeleteIt does.
DeleteYou may be recalling seeing that car in Roger Corman's Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet film from 1965. This is where I recall seeing it. No surprise though, as Corman purchased the rights to Planet of Storms (the Soviet film Planeta Bur) and used footage from Mechte Navstrechu (A Dream Come True), as well as footage from the Soviet science fiction film Nebo Zovyot, (Battle Beyond the Sun). Just a case of Corman's frugal habits implanting memories into the children of the 60s. ;)
ReplyDelete"Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women" was another great adaptation!
DeleteIt used to be on TV around when I was a kid.
Robot John is right up there with Robby the Robot and the Lost in Space Robot!
Wonderful clunky robot design!
Blimey, you guys know your films! Don't think I've seen any of them. The great Roger Corman tho, I know some of his horror films.
DeleteWoodsy, you really can't call yourself a Sci-Fi fan if you haven't seen either of the two films Roger Corman made out of Planeta Bur - priorities, man! SFZ
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Horror first, Sci Fi second SF. I've seen all Corman's Poe cycle 😂
DeleteI have seen it, but it was decades ago.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wild ride and is sort of like a USSR version of Forbidden Planet, in ambition, though the story is completely different.
Robots, 'dinosaurs', cosmonauts, space vehicles e.t.c.
Whats not to like ?
Sounds like a Sunday dinner Mish. Mmmmm!
DeleteMade in 1962, when the Russians were still ahead of the USA in space technology, it looks both ahead of its time, design wise, and yet feels dated and more 1950s in style.
ReplyDeleteI testing stuff.
DeleteThe space car looks like one of the Echo Car series
ReplyDeleteIt does!
DeleteIts on you tube - id hate to be the poor bugger in that robot suit, must have weighed as much as a small car!
ReplyDeleteHa ha, and those Godzillas look weighty too!
