In Search of Rodney

I've been browsing through my copy of In Search of Forever, a biographical gallery of Rodney Matthew's work.

I adored Rodney's work in the Seventies and had posters up in my flat. I still have the Giant Wasp.

A sort of alchemy between Roger Dean and Rick Griffin. Rodney was one of my favourite fantasy artists back in the day and it's been a thrill looking at his paintings again.

Do you like his stuff?

  1. Matthews kind of came in on the back of Roger Dean for me, as I discovered Dean from his record covers, so Matthews appeared with his amazing series of Michael Moorcock book jackets. Matthews did a wonderful series of illustrations based on the Eternal Champion series, depicting Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon and many other of Moorcocks seminal characters. Matthews also lent his design talents to the Playstation game 'Shadow Master' a first person shooter for which he did the character and background design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Master Bill

  2. I am not familiar with any of these artists, but they all sound fantastic, and I will have to seek them out! SFZ

    1. It's well worth it SF. Along with US's Rick Griffin, their art enthralled me as a teenager. The Studio softback book too. Still got it!

  3. There's also a Gerry Anderson connection!
One of Gerry's later projects was a Dark Crystal like puppet show called Lavender Castle. Rodney Matthews provided the visual look of the world. I've only seen snippets of it, on the Lost Words of Gerry Anderson DVD...
