  1. Neat! Very Flash Gordonny!

Hey, guys, got an off topic question for you:
My wife and I have been watching the DVDs of Red Dwarf.
It's the first time we've gone all the way through it.

Now, we've got into Series 7, and... Grant has left the show.
Chris Barrie has left the show, and they've brought Kochanski
in as a replacement. I think this was in the late 1990s.
Just around the time British TV had fired Benny Hill.

Uh... We've really been enjoying the show, but it's fallen apart.
Seems like they don't know how to write for a woman.
I'm now realizing just how much of the show's humor relied on
Chris Barrie doing Rimmer. Kochanski is just not funny.
Kryten and Lister are doing gay jokes and it's just...

Well, I'm no longer looking forward to tonight's episode.

So, my question is: Does it get better....?

    1. I can't really comment Scott. I didn't watch enough of later Red Dwarf to know, but the early stuff was really well made a totally hilarious. I did once cross the road and one of the main actors, the Scouser, was crossing the other way! Ha ha

    3. Yes, skip season 7 & 8, watch the season 9 special, its fun but don't expect much, 10 onwards are really good, lots of good sci-fi and 4 grumpy blokes sitting around poking each other in the ribs, the promised land is a tiny bit over long but still very watchable

  2. Good to see somebody is remaking some of the classic Estes rockets - I had, and launched, several, but only of the very basic variety, nothing as fancy as that. SFZ

  3. Series 7 is patchy, at best, and series 8 is generally considered the worst.
The show then had a long break, during which Doug Naylor tried to get a movie version financed.
Sadly, that never came off, but the show returned with a special, called Red Dwarf X, I think. This was followed by three more series (10, 11 and 12), and finally, so far at least, by another special, which I think was a two parter.
These later series are back on form and feature the original crew of four, and Norman Lovett's version of Holly.

I only have up to Series 8. Hope I can find 10-12!

  4. Finish series 7 and watch 8, but I'm not sure what you'll think of it.

    1. My wife ordered the DVD for Series 10.

But, we've been discussing it, and are thinking: This sudden shift came out in the 1990s.
It was also around the time that TV executives started pushing for more female & gay representation and less racy humor. That was what got Benny Hill fired.

I don't know if "The Red Green Show" made it across the pond, but at the time, they did a big sendup of the executives demanding changes on their show.

      Well, I guess we'll see...!

  5. I built several of those rockets over the years when younger. In fact I have a couple of those unbuilt in my stash currently. I love 1930s-40s-50s spaceships. When I've had some free time, I go through a couple online archives of old pulp SF magazines. Most stories had black and white illustrations at their beginning. Some inspired rocket designs occasionally emerge that would be worthy of a scratch build. 😀
