Choosing a small hospital gift for my poorly sister I was faced with that age old dilemma of fruit or chocolates.
I opted for chocs and hit the aisles. Wanting to travel light I needed a pocket sized box and the choice was: Quality Street, Celebrations, Heroes and some me toos.
It took about a nano-second to choose Quality Street. The vintage graphics alone draw you in and then there's the assortment. I mean, wow!
My personal favourite is the long chewy choc-covered caramel in the gold wrapper, followed closely by the purple paper hazelnut soft caramel. Scrumptious!
I was amazed to see really big versions of a few of these chocs on the aisle too. The Big Purple One and the Green Triangle of solid chocolate, which maybe the nations favourite, I dunno. I may have to treat myself to a big Quality Street one-off this Easter!
My choice of hospital chocolates was vindicated by 1. Passing the Nestlé factory on the train in Halifax (the home of Quality Street!) and 2. My sister's smile when I handed them over.
Would you have chosen Celebrations readers?

Sounds like a great assortment! What's the Green Triangle?
ReplyDeleteI remember assortments by a company called Whitman's when I was little.Later, Whitman's was bought by Russel Stovers' and eventually Lindt.
The green triangle is a solid triangle of minty chocolate I think Brian. Is that the same Stovers who released little packets of plastic toys?
DeleteI believe the toys are "Grandmotber Stover" and not affiliated, but I could be wrong, not really sure.
DeleteI do like Quality Street but many of the flavours we had as kids are no longer included. In particular I remember the Almond Octogon shaped one. Delicious. Growing up in York we had the Rowntree's chocolate factory (now also Nestle) which employed about 16000. Now it's only 2000. We also had Terry's chocolate factory (remember Chocolate Oranges and Terry's All Gold ?) and Cravens sweet factory that produced the pick and mix for Woolworths. Both now long gone.
ReplyDeleteThe almond octogon yes! Where's it gone Yorkie? There was a Cracknel as well wasn't there? As for Terry's, superb chocolates and I so recall the thistle shaped Terry's chocolate. Was it ginger? Oh pick n mix! What a great thing but not enough to save Woolies. My personal favourite box of chocs is Black Magic. Interestingly one of the most popular posts ever on this blog is about the box of Weekend chocolates.
DeleteQuality Street was always my favourite assortment as a 60's kid. And like Woodsy, the gold Caramel was my favourite! They aren't available down here in Oz. Amazing to think they haven't changed in all these years...
ReplyDelete-Unlike Tunnock's Caramel wafers. They may still have their traditional packaging, with the metallic Art Deco stripes, but the quality and quantity of the ingredients have been so reduced over time that today's product is only a pathetic reminder of how wonderful they once were.
I've given up eating them, I'd rather have my memories intact!
