THE HOUSE OF PENELOPE

As a youngster I didn't read Lady Penelope comic as it was obviously aimed at young girls. However, some  of it's content would very much  have appealed to me , The Man from UNCLE in particular. and the Lady Penelope comic strip would occasionally  include Thunderbirds, and to some extent as I'm a big Stingray fan, the Marina comic strip.

The down side for me would have been cooking tips, pop pin ups and fashion.

However, I did find this feature on Lady Penelope's fashion style in the Lady Penelope holiday special of interest.

  1. Yep, I never read the comic either (not sure I even remember seeing it?). The annuals are the only supermarionation ones I don't have either.

    1. I remember seeing it in the newsagent, but as it was a girls comic I wasn't really interested, Kev.
Even now, I've only got the first issue and one of the annuals simply as examples.
I'm occasionally tempted to pick up maybe the first year, until the colour UNCLE strip finishes and the Girl from UNCLE replaces it, but I'd rather concentrate on slowly completing my TV21 2nd series collection, as they are cheaper.

    2. I'd like to collect the TV21 comics but they are beyond me I'm afraid. There are some lovely compilation books of some of the strips and I have several of those.

    3. I managed to complete the 1st series of TV21 a good while back, Kev. I was lucky to hang on to a fair few of my original issues, so over time I just filled the gaps.
I'm around 40 issues short of the 'new' editions, but I'm not in any rush to complete the set.
I have the odd compilation book, although I've steered clear of most of the Anderson Entertainment editions as they tend to include their own content which has little relevance to me.

  2. These pages remind us what a phenomenon Thunderbirds was, at many levels of culture - those sketches of the very "fashionable" Lady P clearly reflected overall trends in fashion at that time, and I am sure there were many fans of that aspect of the program. As I have always said, Thunderbirds had something for everyone! SFZ

  3. Great images Scoop. Some of these dress designs made it into the toy market as carded sets. If I was a Century 21 toy completist I'd have a go at collecting them too, but fortunately I'm not and my bank balance is glad as well! Great pictures.

  4. I never owned any of these comics whichever name it went by. My god daughter was read it and my only memory of the comic was a story of a girl that could talk with and understand her dog. I think my god daughter and her Old English Sheepdog could understand each other.

I think my indifference to the comic strips was because I found the accent used by Sylvia Anderson for Lady Penelope irritating and I didn't care about the character at all.
