Any Old Iron?

There's a travelling antiques valuer visiting our village hall.

A sort of fancy rag and bone man I guess (I remember them vividly as a kid.Do you?), dressed in a suit sat at a little baize topped table.

There'll be valuations galore and hopefully a few ..... purchases!

We've lots of old creaky stuff that needs to go: jewelery, cutlery, nic nacs. You'll have the same I'm sure, gathering dust in the dark.

It's probably of no value whatsoever - our stuff - we've done an auction and this is what's left - so one last blast is worth a punt and the walk to the hall will do us oldies some good.

I suspect though there'll be a queue a mile long as everyone will have had the same idea!

After this, TV's Cash Cow is the next stop!

Have you ever been to a travelling antiques valuation day readers?

  1. Never seen a travelling antiques valuation, they just usually put a leaflet through your door nowadays. I do remember the old rag and bone men though. Nowadays you can just put stuff outside and travellers will pick them up. When my mum was in a care home the home used to put old and broken wheelchairs etc in a skip by the car park and travellers emptied it every week for scrap metal. Saved the home a fortune. When I had to clear my parents house I had an antique valuer check the furniture - it was old 1950s stuff. He said it was worthless but offered £5 for a revolving wooden chair on castors. I saw he sold it later for £50! So watch out for valuations - they want to make a profit.

    1. We did OK I guess today with our bag of old tat, cutlery, some rings and a few watches. £90 cash. They took their time and looked at everything, showing us makes and marks. It was all about the weight of gold and silver really but they bought everything we took, which gets it out of our house and minds. Of more interest were the old toys they'd bought off some one: Attacking Martian, JR21 TB5, Dan Dare Radio Station, Terrytoon Deputy Dawg Projector. All in tatty boxes.
