Seeing this ace Bandai Akira motorcycle on auction .....
... Reminded that I have this film on VHS and also a film artist's cel - from Akira the 1989 movie.
It was one of a large set I bought 25 years ago at the NEC Memorabilia. I sold them all except this one a few years later when I had a vintage toy fair stall. It's the one that got away.
It's a bit of a tentacle writhing off Akira's cryo-chamber in the ocean off Tokyo Bay as seen in this GIF. You can almost spot the exact bit!
Have you any film cells?
I loved Akira - both the animation and the soundtrack are excellent. The original manga runs to a huge volume too. Ive got the bike too, lovely die cast toy about the size of a Rrumbler. Bill
ReplyDeleteSo is the red bike pictured a die cast Bill?
DeleteYes I have some Akira cels too. Interestingly an amount of the cells ended up in Australia and at some convention or collectors fair, and I found a bunch in a green plastic garbage bag, for a pittance each. Most of them were that steaming tentacle scene ( I have one too!) But I also got a high shot of the toys crawling across the bed.
ReplyDeleteThe Akira soundtrack is one of my missus's favourite CDs.
Both Ghost in the Shell movie soundtracks are among my favourites too! Bill
DeleteAmazing that you have a similar cel Looey! There must be hundreds of them. I bought at least twenty! They have three hand-written letters in the top right corner. CEF?
DeleteNo Akira cels but I do have a couple of Saint Seya cels, and a couple Heavy Metal L-Gain cels. But my centerpieces are my cels from Hokuto No Ken and Hokuto No Ken 2 including the pencil drawings.
ReplyDelete^Saint Seiya and L-Gaim
DeleteHow fab Lance! Have you got them on the wall?
DeleteI saw Akira in tha Scala cinema during the UKCAC 90 comic con in London, I was very drunk and passed out, very remiss of me so I vowed to own it in VHS, eventually I picked up the 2 video set, the original and the overdub with the lads who did the ninja turtle voices from the movie, needless to say I never watched that version 😀
ReplyDeleteI've got that double tape VHS set too Marky! I can't believe you passed out during Akira at the flicks! Ha ha. I did too once, nearly. I was starving and tense. It was Silence of the Lambs, the baton scene! I saw stars and quickly staggered outside before I fainted!
