We've seen this Thunderbird 1 solid state radio already this summer. A gorgeous thing, here's a lovely condition example on auction this year.
Space was a popular theme for radios. Here's a fab boxed Space Shuttle in perfect shape, again an old auction shot.
Have you a radio readers?
Never seen anything like these. Especially SMH at the space shuttle one, tabletop AM radios in the late 70s? Maybe I live in an alternate reality, but the heyday of AM was long gone by that time. Last time I saw a separate AM radio it was hand-held and it was the mid-60s. Sure, you still had AM in cars, but again that was pretty much restricted to talk radio, sports announcers and emergency broadcasts by then. Of course I'm talking USA, maybe things were different in other parts of the world? (For historical context look up "album-oriented rock" and such.) As to your question, I still have a clock-radio alarm (I can't wake up to shocking loud noises or I'll die prematurely so have it tuned to classical), and a couple of stereo components that might still work and include the radio component (although the CD player and record player died long ago and are in a landfill somewhere). I only listen to radio in the car. At home I use my computer for music. Curious to hear from others...
ReplyDeleteHa ha, the premature dying bit made me chuckle Baron! I had lots of little pocket transistors as a kid. Very spy like with little dials and aerials. I didn't have any novelty radios like these I don't think. Now the radio is on in the car and there's one in the kitchen. As for other stuff, I still play LPs, cassettes and CDs. Just cleaned up a boom box from the attic. The sound quality is fab!
DeleteLong ago, you heard names like

Who are they Anon?
DeleteAs a kid in the 60's, I had a Jaguar E Type radio. It was a thing of beauty, but it's almost scale sized metal antenna, attached to the fender with a tiny screw fitting and it was far too fragile for any play...
ReplyDeleteWow, sounds wunderbar that Looey. Such a cool car design.
