Sad to read that astronaut, Jim Lovell has passed away at the age of 97.
Although he is best remembered as the commander of Apollo 13, to me I remember him more as one of the crew members of Apollo 8, the first manned spacecraft to reach, and orbit the Moon in December, 1968.
As a youngster, I still remember watching on television, the moment Apollo 8 capsule landed in the ocean.
Early the following year, I also remember seeing an offer in TV21 from Crosse & Blackwell, and sending away for 4 colour prints featuring moments, including the well remembered 'Earthrise' photo, taken by William Anders ,from the Apollo 8 mission.
Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Really sad to hear this.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on that, Kev. In spite of Apollo 13, I always associate Jim Lovell with the Apollo 8 mission, as I was becoming more aware of what was happening in the space race. The mission was, for me as memorable as Apollo 11.
DeleteYes, I saw this on the News. Incredibly sad news Scoop as another original of that golden NASA generation has sadly passed. RIP JL.
ReplyDeleteWoodsy - Ed here (Google is giving me grief and I can't post a comment unless under 'Anonymous'). I was really sad to hear of Jim Lovell's passing - we lost one of the greats! I sent you a photo with accompanying story. RIP James Lovell
ReplyDeleteIt was Scoops post Ed. I'll send it on. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteJim Lovell was a total hero.
ReplyDeleteWhy ?
Because he turned almost certain disaster into survival victory.
And he flew around the Moon !
A legend !
RIP
