I tried to get one as a kid but couldn't manage it (my local model shop did try to order it for me). I now have the brilliant Wand Company ones, whose communicator, for example, works! I don't have a tricorder but I believe they are going to make one.
I use a flip phone here in NYC only because the phone company would no longer support my Nokia. All I want is a phone as there are no longer pay phones in the street. Smart phones may be smart but their users usually aren't!
I did take a cursory look into this apparent flip phone popularity in the States using my Smartphone of course: 17% of Americans still use flip phones, and the reasons given is " they can be useful for 'digital detoxes', or for seniors who don't want to use a complicated mobile phone". As Mr Spock would say, "Fascinating!"
A sweeping statement! Too many users of smart phones seem to be so absorbed they forget what else they are doing. The modern equivalent of "Can't walk and chew gum"
What a wonderful model kit set Scoop. I never had it but I would have adored anything in my hands from Star trek as a kid! The Tricorder was just brilliant and that little tubey whirling thingy that Bones had too. I loved that!
1) What was the point in buying something that wasn't actual size?
2) It was incredible expensive.
There aren't many photos of build-ups out there -- and those which are available appear to have been amended by their modellers to look more accurate -- but here are a couple of links.
Yeah, it does look small compared to a full size version, definitely not for the adult collector. Saying that, I reckon if I 'd have had it as a ten year old, I'd have probably loved it.

ReplyDeleteThe Wand versions are excellent, but far too expensive . The Playmates ones are more my style!
DeleteFun stuff!
ReplyDeleteWe had those when I was a kid.
Now, I carry a flip phone in my breast pocket!
An excuse to say, 'Scotty, beam us up!'
DeleteHaven't used a flip phone for years, Scott, are they still around? I've seen ads for the Samsung one which folds out into a smartphone.
Well, Flip phones are still around here. I don't have a smart phone. This one is just for emergencies and stuff. It can't text or send photos.
DeleteI have this theory that some time decades in the future people will discover that their smart phones can be used to have vocal conversations.

DeleteOoh! A sweeping statement, Terra! ;)

ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the whirling thingy Dr McCoy used were actually salt shakers, Woodsy!
DeleteAccording to the InterNet, the set was 1:3 scale.
ReplyDeleteI passed on this at the time for two reasons:
1) What was the point in buying something that wasn't actual size?
2) It was incredible expensive.

DeleteDon't forget the toy set https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nO6S9pswT70
ReplyDeleteA little bit of Remco 'clunk'! The set looks good, very similar in size and shape to the AMT.
