A couple of fascinating photos that have surfaced on line showing what is apparently the restored docking hub from the original 8' Space Station prop from 2001:A Space Odyssey. The rest of the original prop was photographed a few years after the film was made, showing it unceremoniously dumped on a rubbish tip. Prior to that, this middle section had supposably been removed and rescued, and is now in the hands of a private collector, who has had it professionally restored.
Amazing the iconic film props which were just trashed... thank goodness somebody managed to save this incredible bit of film history!
ReplyDeleteA similar story is the fate of the original Super-Train model, from NBC's failed 1979 TV series. It was picked up and advertised for sale in model railroad magazines by Associated Hobby Manufacturers of Philadelphia in the early 1980s, but there were no takers (!), and the model was still sitting around, gathering dust in AHM's warehouse when they closed up shop in the mid-1980s. Somebody found the model, took it and restored it, or is planning on restoring it. A terrible TV program, but a terrific space-age model!
Wow, Supertrain, a blast from the past, Ziggurat. It never aired here in the UK, probably a good thing, it sounds like railroad version of Love Boat. The design of Supertrain did look good, though. I remember seeing photos of it in Starlog, or a magazine like that at the time. I believe the models used in the series cost the studio a fortune. Good to hear one's been rescued.
