REMEMBERING OMNI

I used to love OMNI magazine.

It first came out in 1978. I was 17 and lapped up its creamy mix of sci-fi, super science and futuristic art. I remember the covers were just brilliant.

In the back kitchens at parties were all the serious switched-on stuff was discussed I used to chuck in a few ideas from OMNI every now and then like the guy who grew a seedling in his eye. Don't think it impressed anybody though!

I didn't get all the OMNI's in the late Seventies but I thoroughly enjoyed the few issues I had, which I got on Preston fish-market I think. Sadly they've long gone now.

I've read that somewhere online is the entire run of the mags right up to its end in 1997, but after a few minutes jumping through hoops and peppered with pop-ups I gave up I'm afraid!

Reading Wiki I was amazed to see that OMNI also had a brief association with an old 60's comic called T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents in the mid-90's, but by then I was an old git in my mid-thirties and had forgotten all about OMNI.

Did you like OMNI readers?

  1. I've still got all mine in a box somewhere . . . if the rain's not got to them! They got harder and harder to find here, but I could still get them in the PX in Berlin for a while, a bit like Heavy Metal, yet when Forbidden Planet started getting HM again; there was no corresponding Omni . . . blub!

    1. I'm glad someone remembers Omni like me. And you have yours in a box still! Marvellous Hugh! How cool. I've alas never read a single issue of Heavy Metal!
