Chinook on the horizon

Occasionally a Chinook helicopter flies over Moonbase.

Its an impressive sight and the sound of the double rotors always exciting.

I'm not sure of there was ever a Chinook in the worlds of Gerry Anderson but they always look futuristic to me.

I once bought this Marx Chinook at a car boot sale. Bill B kindly repaired the rotors for me.

    I often work with large personnel type helicopters when I need to get a large air handling unit on top of tall buildings.Sometimes its the only way if we cant find a crane tall enough.Very exciting,and a tad dangerous, but the pay is good.

    The Marx toy shown is not a Boeing-Vertol (now just Boeing) CH-47 Chinook, but an older design. The Piasecki HUP (the designation means Helicopter - general purpose Utilty transport - built by Piasecki) Retriever was built for the US Navy from 1949 to 1954. The US Army version was the UH-25 Army Mule. Despite the markings on the model, the type was not used by Britain, although the Royal Canadian Navy had a few. Piasecki and Boeing-Vertol built several helicopters with this tandem-rotor layout, which are very similar in appearance. The HUP, first flown in 1948, had only a single engine despite its twin rotors, and a tail-down sit.
    I had a small Chinook in the 1970s, not sure who made it, and Matchbox currently have one in the Sky Busters aircraft series. There have also been a few plastic kits over the years.

      You know your Chinooks Paul! A fantastic resume of the vehicle. They're just so spectacular to see with those double rotors. I had a lovely die-cast Matchbox Chinook too and occasionally see it at car boot sales. I wonder if Gerry Anderson used Chinooks in his TV shows? Just catching up with emails and comments so I will get back to you soon with any more you've sent!
