MIDORI ATLAS - LUNAR CLIMBER'S SISTER SHIP

WOTAN, he who cannot be stopped, has found this shot of the MIDORI ATLAS on the fabulous
http://www.japansuperfantasticmodel.com website. This is the same design as the PAYA 'Space Vehicle' in the pic of the PAYA toys leaflet I posted a couple of nights ago. You can clearly see the family resemblance with the Lunar Climber. Would of made a great Project Sword toy!

CENTURY 21 LUNAR CLIMBER - BIGGER PICTURES

WOTAN has provided bigger pictures of the wonderful Century 21 Lunar Climber, which appeared on Ebay in 2007. It looks like a black remote control unit tucked underneath, although there doesn't seem to be mention of it on the box sides we can see - it does say that it's battery operated though. Anyone got pics of the hidden sides?

MODEL KITS USED IN CAPTAIN SCARLET TV SHOW BY MARC J. FRATTASIO

US Space and Railways enthusiast Marc J. Frattasio has kindly given the blog permission to re-print his brilliant model kits article from the mid - 1990's ( pictures re-grouped by me):

By Marc J. Frattasio, USA

1 Martian Excursion Vehicle

Here is the vehicle that started the war of nerves with the Mysterons during the first episode of Captain Scarlet. The MEV was of course recycled from the Thunderbirds Are Go feature film.
The MEV model seen here was probably made from wood. It had tracks on the bottom, probably from the Japanese 'MS-58 Missile Tank' or 'M-1 Tank' battery operated toy. However, it seems that just the tracks were used, not the motor mechanism, as this model looks like it is being pulled along a wire. The MEV model has a Jetex pyrotechnic motor installed underneath it to blow up clouds of Fuller's Earth to simulate Mars dust. The interior is illuminated.

2. XK-3 Rocket

The XK-3 rocket was used to take Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue, and Lt. Green on a trip to the moon in 'Lunarville 7'.
This model appears to have been a simple turned wooden shape. The model was probably filmed upside down to make the exhaust flame appear to shoot straight downwards. The exhaust flame and smoke of model rockets that were filmed the 'proper' way often curled upwards, ruining the effect. Thus, rockets like this were often filmed upside down in Captain Scarlet.

3. XK-3 Moon Lander

This is the XK-3 moon lander used by Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue, and Lt. Green on their mission to the Lunarville 7 moonbase in 'Lunarville 7'.
This appears to have been a simple wooden model which was detailed with kit parts and other small shapes. The landing gear legs seem to have been made from plastic model railroad truss bridge parts. Spacecraft models such as this were often covered with panel detailing which was made from adhesive tape.

4. Moon Hopper

The unusual moon hopper was featured in 'Lunarville 7' and 'Crater 101'. I would think that hopping around over great distances would not be the most attractive way to travel, but what do I know?
This is a wooden model that has metal landing gear. There is a Jetex pyrotechnic motor installed underneath the model to raise clouds of Fuller's Earth dust on the moonscape sets. Note the cargo pod. This was attached to the model for 'Crater 101'. It is supposed to contain the Spectrum team's lunar tank. Apparently stock footage of the moon hopper from 'Lunarville 7' was used in 'Crater 101' and in those scenes, the moon hopper does not have it's cargo pod!
Trivia note: the Captain Scarlet moon hopper probably inspired the similar SHADO moon mobiles featured in UFO.

5. Captain Scarlet's Lunar Tank

Here is Captain Scarlet's lunar tank as seen in 'Lunarville 7'. Note the small plasticine model of Lt. Green in space suit bending down to look at the tracks.
This is another model that was built on top of the battery operated tracks and mechanism of the Japanese 'MS-58 Missile Tank' or 'M-1 Tank' toy. The superstructure is wood. Note all the various kit parts that cover the structure of this mode. Visible are aircraft fuel tanks, torpedoes, and bits from the Airfix SRN-1 hovercraft kit.

6. Mysteron Lunar Tank

This lunar tank was used by a Mysteron agent to plant a nuclear bomb at the Mysteron complex featured in 'Crater 101'.
The lunar tank model was based upon the Remco 'Tiger Joe' battery operated toy tank. A new superstructure and operating crane have been added to the toy. The basic shape of the lunar tank has been detailed with various plastic kit parts.
Trivia note: That domed structure behind the lunar tank was actually the large scale section of the Phobos camera satellite featured in 'The Shadow of Fear'.

7. Mysteron Automated Construction Vehicle Mobile Control Unit

This strange looking thing is a computerized mobile control vehicle used by the Mysterons to direct the operation of various automated construction vehicles engaged in building a Mysteron complex on the surface of the moon in 'Crater 101'.
This model seems to have been based upon a photographic spotlight reflector. Various bits and pieces from who-knows-where have been stuck to the basic shape. A Jetex pyrotechnic motor was fitted to the underside to raise clouds of Fuller's Earth 'moon dust'. Note the 'springy' wire antennae!

8. Automated Mysteron Lunar Construction Vehicle

This is one of the automated lunar construction vehicles used by the Mysterons in 'Crater 101'.
At least two of these strange looking Mysteron things were made. They were probably based upon some kind of decorative plastic sphere or hemisphere with plastic and wire parts added. A Jetex pyrotechnic motor was fitted to the underside to raise a cloud of Fuller's Earth 'moon dust'.

9. Mysteron Flying Saucer

The Mysterons came to Earth in glowing flying saucers to attack Spectrum's headquarters in 'Attack on Cloudbase'.
A number of these glowing flying saucer models were made, and no two were exactly alike. They seem to have been made from clear plastic dinner plates and vaguely egg shaped things which were also made from clear plastic. The saucers were detailed with automotive striping tape. Some of the saucer models had metal 'towers' on top and others didn't. The saucers were illuminated with internal lights which may have been fed electricity through the thin metal control wires.

10. Decoy Satellite

This large decoy satellite was used by Spectrum to divert the attention of the Mysterons away from a much smaller camera satellite vehicle in 'The Shadow of Fear'.
Very little for sure can be said about this model. It was probably made from a combination of wood, plastic kit parts, and plastic toy parts. Note the large painted backdrop behind the model.

11. Minisat Payload Shroud

This is the payload shroud that protected the Spectrum minisat camera satellite lander that was placed on the Martian moon Phobos in 'The Shadow of Fear'. In this episode, Spectrum plotted a special Earth to Mars trajectory that kept the space vehicle between Mars and the Martian moon Phobos so that the Mysterons were unable to detect it until after it had landed on Phobos.
This small hollow model appears to have been made from a couple of plastic bottles or other some other kind of plastic household containers.

12. Minisat Camera Satellite Lander

This is the minisat camera lander that was landed on the Martian moon Phobos by Spectrum in 'The Shadow of Fear'. With the minisat camera safely on Phobos, Spectrum expected to get full photographic coverage of Mysteron activity on Mars as Phobos circled the red planet.
At least two of these Phobos minisat camera lander models were made, a large version and a small version. Plus, a large scale camera dome section was made too. The Phobos minisat camera lander appears to have been made out of wood and a variety of plastic bits and pieces.

13. SKR-4

The SKR-4 spacecraft was featured in 'Inferno'.
This model appears to have been made from a number of hollow plastic shapes to which various bits and pieces were stuck for detailing. The front end, for example, appears to have been taken from Revell's Vostok Russian spacecraft plastic kit. This model is covered with panel details made from bits of adhesive tape.

14. TVR-17

Here is the TVR-17 radio station satellite featured in 'White as Snow'. Note the Mysteron rings. The TVR-17 has been caught here in the process of Mysteronization!
This model appears to have been made from a number of hollow plastic shapes. It's hollow nature is revealed when it is blown apart in 'White as Snow'. The model was sprayed with gold paint and was covered with black automobile striping tape.

15. CB-29 Rocket

This CB-29 rocket was used by Dr. Linda Nolan, the controller of Lunarville 7, to warn Captain Scarlet and his Spectrum team of a Mysteron nuclear booby trap in 'Crater 101'.
This is a simple model which was made from turned wooden shapes. The model was covered with panel details made from adhesive tape bits.

LUNAR CLIMBER X-11000 BY PAYA OF SPAIN

US Space Toy enthusiast Rob Godwin has sent these awesome shots of the PAYA LUNAR CLIMBER X-11000 shown in a previous blog this week. BUT these are way better pictures so thanks a lot! Rob says ' Here's the info on the Paya series. They were and are a long established Spanish toy maker. The Lunar Climber was part of a three toy space series: The Lunar Climber, Lunar Jeep and Space Vehicle. I have attached a catalog page for the three toys ( above). I own the lunar rover (top right) and will send pics soon'.

Thanks Rob! The box art is far better than I'd expected! And the Climber itself is excellent. I love the remote control unit too!

When were PAYA making these toys? After Century 21 in the '60's?

PROJECT SWORD, SPACEX AND BEAR ALLEY

Before I hit the sack I thought I'd highlight a fabulous PROJECT SWORD / SPACEX / COMICS blogspot in Steve Holland's excellent BEAR ALLEY blog. Sort of links to my last thought about where is the design for the Lunar Climber from - TV21? Be sure to read the comments too on Bear Alley:

LUNAR CLIMBERS A GO GO!

Above - Century 21 Lunar Climber UK

Above - Paramount/ Midori Astro Car Japan

Above - Paya X11000 Spain

It's Sunday night. I've just washed up after a cracking roast chicken dinner and I thought I'd go on the blog awhile. I've got some new pictures of the Moonship and the X60 Rocket Launcher - but not by Century/ JR21 - but that's one for later!

'Bout time we looked at that elsusive half- sister of PROJECT SWORD toys, the fabulous LUNAR CLIMBER. It first popped up on this blog in a Moonship/ Lunar Climber thread between the 15 - 17th September 2008, where all the discussion about Project SWORD .v. Project MOON is. Thought I'd follow up with a few pictures of fantastic Climbers by different manufacturers from readers of the blog.
The Paramount pics were tracked down by the unstoppable WOTAN. For more amazing japanese space kits, some very SWORDESQUE, visit the original site they came from:
The Century 21 and Paya climbers are both offa Ebay in 2007. Any more Lunar Climbers out there Swordlings?
The inevitable question now is - did the Lunar Climber appear in the Project Sword comic strips in TV21 / SOLO comics? It's not in the PS Annual, 'cos I've checked!

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY TOYS by WOTAN

Its probably well known to readers that Project Sword piggybacked on the marketing of Kubricks 2001, from the heavy use of stills from the film to hiring the Hatchett Club next door to the cinema on the opening night and laying out a huge Sword diorama for toy retailers ( see earlier posting HATCHETTS). The look and feel of a lot of the Sword toys is reminiscent of the stark whiteness and clean lines of the 2001 vehicles, especially the Orion Pan Am Clipper.

However, there were very few actual toys made for the film. Airfix made a good sized model of the Orion as well as other manufacturers and there is a tin robot version of Dave Bowman, but I recently discovered two quite remarkable toys. Made in Japan, the photo shows two of possibly three models - an Orion Clipper and a 'Space Ferry'. If memory serves, there may have been a third model in the series, but i cant find the image source to confirm. The look of the toys I find is very Swordesque, especially the shade of blue plastic that was used in the Zero X, Dyna Soar and Nuclear Ferry. The Space Ferry could easily be Task Force 1's smaller brother!
Can anyone else shed any light ?

THE GERRY ANDERSON COMPLETE COMIC HISTORY

It's late in the night here in darkest West Yorkshire but I can't go to bo-bo's without mentioning Shaqui Le Vesconte's superb site, which I have just re-read on PROJECT SWORD COMIC STRIPS. If you want to know about the original PROJECT SWORD storyline and see brilliant drawings of SWORD ships in action reprinted on the site ( and all the other Gerry Anderson series) from the 1960's TV21 and SOLO comics then this is THE place to go! The excellent SWORD section is split into two parts so be sure to check both out. SPACEX gets a mention too and the sites help make sense of the relationship between the toys ( SWORD/SPACEX) and the comic strips. Fab!

NUCLEAR FERRIES GALORE!

Keen eyed SWORD fan Rob Godwin has spotted that the beautiful 1960's JR21 X60 Rocket from the launcher set is the same as the Nuclear Ferry in the Project Sword SOLO comic strip. Have a look!

The bottom yellow/ blue X60 toy rocket launcher photograph is from the truly wonderful american Mark Bergin Toys site:

and the top X60 toy rocket launcher in mint shop- stock quality is from the equally fantastic UK Metropolis Toys:

For fun I have added in pictures of the iconic Century 21 PROJECT SWORD Nuclear Ferry ( coutesy of WOTAN and friends) and the card art for the 1960's Tri-ang SPACEX Nuclear Ferry ( anybody got a pic of the toy itself?)

You see here clearly too the difference in the logos of Century 21 Toys and JR21 Toys, albeit essentially the same company.
Time for bed!

STINGRAY SUBMARINE AIRCRAFT CARRIER - MORE!

All images copyrighted © Graham Bleathman and repsective copyright and licence holders.

WOTAN's googlings have discovered Graham Bleathman's fabulous cutaway of the Stingray Submarine Aircraft Carrier on his website. Graham is one of the foremost Gerry Anderson artists around. Some truly lovely stuff, SWORDesque vehicles for sure but no actual SWORD, more's the pity!

The link to the actual image is http://www.grahambleathman.co.uk/images/subaircraftcarriermed.jpg

and the website is http://www.grahambleathman.co.uk/index.htm

ATOMIC CARRIER BOX ART REVEALED!

The WOTAN grapevine strikes gold again! Here is the beautiful box art and lovely biult-up model of the Paramount Nuclear/ Atomic Carrier. The picture and information is courtesy of Terry Harle:

Captain Scarlet Series No. 20 Nuclear Carrier (released 1968 ?)

Box dimensions: 14 cm x 9 cm x 3 cm
Kit number: 129
Retail: ¥50
Moulded in 7 red and 4 white plastic pieces.
Propeller is powered by rubber band.
Decals included.
A Century 21 licensed product
Other than being powered by rubber band there are no other ‘action’ features in fact there are no Angel Interceptors included in the kit.

ATOMIC POWERED CARRIER

WOTAN and I have been chewing the fat about a toy he saw in toy shop window back in the 60's. Next to a Probe Force ship was a submarine streamlined like the SWORD liner in the annual. Googling the night away I've come across a great oldish article about Captain Scarlet kits by Darkstar2. There's a cool old kit in there, Paramount's Atomic Powered Carrier. (no. 1260).

Although not the toy WOTAN saw as a wee boy, it is intersting. The site says 'Paramount Industries produced a final kit based on Spectrum craft, their No. 1260 ATOMIC POWERED CARRIER. Box artwork shows the ship launching two Angel Interceptors from one of its three decks, as it churned through ocean waves. Though obviously a gigantic craft, its kit form measured only 5 inches. To the hull was attached an elastic band powered water screw and variable-position rudder. Though it was finely detailed, its accuracy is unknown as I have never seen this craft anywhere other than in its box painting' ( darkstar2).

To see the full article check out:

http://www.darkstar2.demon.co.uk/models/andermod.htm

I've even found a forum discussion that's discussed the very same kit!

http://spectrum-headquarters.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=608

So just what did WOTAN see in that toy shop window?
Goodnight all.

AMERICAN SWORD

US Space author Rob Godwin has sent me these fabulous shots of his American Project SWORD ships made by Tarheel in the 1960's. Absoluteley fabulous. There are a couple of Spacex boxed toys in the top pic, together with a NASA Probe Force 3 and a Day Fran Space Glider. I love the photo box art, it has a completely different feel to the painted artwork of the UK Century 21 boxes. hard to belive the mighty Moon Ranger was just $2 something back then! More American SWORD ( sounds like a ninja film!) to come!

SUB SPACE by WOTAN

Fellow Space toy fan WOTAN is on the blog: 'I have a number of toys that look like they could have fitted neatly into the Project Sword range. In the SWORD Annual there are a couple of vehicles that travel over or into water: the SEA SWORD* Hovercraft, DIVER 1 Submarine and the OCEANIA - a large transport vessel. This bears a striking resemblance to the Submarine Aircraft Carrier from Stingray (pic courtesy Kim Stevens). Did this ever make it into a toy ? I'm almost sure I have seen a toy version in dark blue plastic with a white upper hull and tiny silver planes?'
'Meanwhile, I have discovered a very real candidate for inclusion into my Sword fleet - the Atomic Submarine by Ranetta. This beauty is about 11 inches long and weighs a ton with the batteries in! Ive added paper sword decals and a little photoshoppery for effect!'
Nice one Wotan!
*SEA SWORD appears on pages 7 to 9 in the Project Sword Annual 1968, SWORD 2 appears on page 7, TRANS OCEANIC SWORD JET SHIP ( OCEANIA) appears on pages 89 – 93 and DIVER 1 on pages 90 to 93 of the Annual. Ed Blog.

TAKE US TO YOUR LEADER by WOTAN

After the positive response for the Moon Platoon alien, I thought i'd flag up another mystery alien! Posing on this shot with him are King Crater (sadly minus crown) from the R & L Kelloggs 'Crater Critters' series which came in UK Sugar Smacks cereal in the seventies and known as 'Kingly' in the states and Oz. Sat on his royal right is a the mystery figure, 'Man from Mars'. This little fellow is what appears to be a gumball premium and has pop out eyes! On his round, green back are the words 'Made in Hong Kong' (no surprise there) and 'MAN FROM MARS', which leads me to believe he may have other relations in the galaxy.... can anyone identify him ?

FIRST CONTACT by WOTAN

Following the initial post of Wotan's Favourite Martian, heres a shot of the rest of his force with the Apollo Moon Exploring set chrome figures and later 1980's greyish knock offs. In the back are three 2.5" jumping figures, each mounted on a suction cup and spring mechanism.

APOLLO SATURN ROCKET - SEARS AND SWORD

US Project Sword enthusiast Rob Godwin has sent these fabulous pictures of the US Sears Apollo Saturn Rocket and Base, together with the amazing box. The bottom picture shows the Century 21 Rocket next to the taller Sears. I find it fascinating how the Sears set is like a mix of the Century 21 Cape Kennedy set and Apollo Saturn Rocket. Rob says that the SWORD Saturn V was modelled on a 1964 Sears rocket. It is almost identical but smaller (i.e. the mold was cast from the Sears one). The original Sears vehicle actually emitted smoke and came with a launch tower. It is extremely rare! enjoy!

Rob Godwin, keen US Project Sword collector and NASA author has written a cool book 'The Lunar Exploration Scrapbook' ( see link below). About the pictures supplied by my good friend Wotan for the blog, Rob says 'The picture at the top is the Grumman Mobile Base Simulator. There is three pages about it in my book. It is currently at the Cradle of Aviation museum in Long Island. I actually created a full texture mapped 3D wireframe of it for my book and then animated it to show how it would have been deployed on the moon.
'The next picture is an artist's rendering of Krafft Ehricke's design for a nuclear deep space ferry. I am about to publish a whole book about him in the near future in conjunction with his estate called "Krafft Ehricke's Extraterrestrial Imperative".
'The third picture is also in my book and is the General Motors MTA (Mobility Test Article) GM-1. It was tested at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in 1967 (where the picture was taken). It is one of dozens of rovers pictured in my book that were tested. However, the Scramble Bug was based on a Boeing design called the MOLAB Model 25-52106 (also in my book along with ten other Boeing designs.)'.
There'll be more from Rob and pictures of his stunning American Tarheel Project Sword collection this week!
Thanks a bunch Rob!

PROJECT SWORD and SPACE DESIGN

It's now late on Friday, there's nothing on the box so I'm posting some thoughts and pics from fellow UK fan Wotan on the possible origin of the SWORD designs:

' The Prospector is based on a NASA concept and I've also come across other designs from the NASA stable such as the Grumman Molab, which is clearly the ANT from the Project Sword Annual - this now resides in the Smithsonian. The Booster Rocket crops up as an early nuclear Mars vehicle, but info is thin on the ground now as these designs come from pre-1969 and sometimes much earlier'.

Hatchett's Playground Club PROJECT SWORD / 2001 Promo!

Well it's Friday evening in the UK and the end of the working week. I've got that Friday feeling and plan to go to the local IMAX and see Batman the Dark Knight on the big screen with my mate Mark. And then I was sent this fabulous 1960's article (bottom of the two) from fellow enthusiast Kim about Project Sword Toys being displayed in a London nightclub and in cinemas to coincide with showings of Kubrick's 2001 A Space Oddysey. What a great story! Click on the picture to read the article and see how many different SWORD vehicles you can spot! It's amazing just how hard Century 21 were marketing Project Sword and yet not that many people remember it. The picture - bunny girls having fun with sword toys - is more than a grown man can take!
PS. The top pictured text is another article - from a trade journal at the time - about the Hatchett's event courtesy of Darth. See also the Philosophic Toad's comment to this piece for more.

The whole link between SPACE ODDYSEY 2001 / SWORD and real Spaceship design is one to watch out for on the blog.

My Favourite Martian by Wotan

During the space age of toys, rubber monsters were popular as a pocketmoney collectable. Among these, I found as a boy a range of six space creatures. These were apparently sold in the US as 'Moon Goons' or similar and in the UK alongside the 'Teachers Pets' mosnters. Each one had a suction cup under it and was generally molded in a browny gold coloured silicone, and painted greens and blues and yellows on top. Among these six was one large 'bell shaped' alien that I as a kid alway thought would be the boss!

As more and more space toys hit the market, i began to find these same aliens in other guises, as tiny chrome coloured figures to threaten the golden astronauts in Apollo Moon Exploring sets and also on keyrings and other knock off rubber toys. Recently, i decided to immortalise my favourite alien in a painting, the classic space creature of my childhood. Having so many different versions of the same toy, I wonder if he appears anywhere else - maybe as a cereal premium ? Picture shows Painting above and original alien on far left, silver Apollo set aliens and various copies. Large yellow figure is a solid plastic keyring.

Moonship Spotted!

A fellow Project Sword enthusiast, Wotan, spotted this Moonship on Ebay. With the box too! Notice the all- important Union Jack sticker, which is clearly visible in the old Trade Ad I posted the other day. And by golly, that's a Century 21 Toys logo on the top right corner! So, besides both being Regent Toys, the Lunar Climber AND the Moonship were also BOTH Century 21 Toys. Excellent. Cheers Wotan! Looks soooooo sleak and great but I now realise that the tinplate Moonship that I got at some expense in the early 1990's ( top picture) is not the real deal, it's something else! Drat, double drat!
