DAN DARE MEETS DR WHO

I love it when fictional things I'm interested in cross over and connect in some way, especially when a fictional universe joins up with our own.

One such brief  instance takes place at the beginning of the feature film, 'Dr Who and The Daleks'.

While the rest of his young family are reading books on physics, Dr Who is completely absorbed reading a copy of the latest Eagle comic.

The cover can clearly be seen showing some smashing Keith Watson artwork.

Strangely, I can remember thinking as a youngster, why isn't Dr Who reading TV Century 21 which at the time of the film's release was full of Dalek related material and much more relevant than Dan Dare.

This much sought after edition was sponsored by the film makers and published a month before the film's release.

Of course, my young mind hadn't realised that the Eagle shown on screen would  have been published months before (it's dated 20 March, 1965, as opposed to the film's release date 23 August 1965)

And again, little seven year old Scoop hadn't twigged to something even more relevant to the plot in that if Dr Who had read the same dated  TV Century 21 issue as the Eagle he would have had prior knowledge of the Daleks and their machiavellian tactics.

Things could have turned out a lot different if only Dr Who had placed a regular order for TV Century 21 at the newsagent!

GUFIYA TOY STORE JAPAN

Well Christmas is over and the the New Year is 24 hours away. That time of year when we make resolutions and consider dreams. One of my dreams is to visit Japan. Watching video's like this one just make me want to go even more. This is the Gifuya candy gift store in Tokyo [ courtesy of You Tube]. Enjoy!

START 1961 WITH A DAN DARE ADVENTURE

Continuing with my current indulgence with Dan Dare, and what with 2014 just around the corner I thought  it would be nice to dig out an Eagle cover celebrating the New Year.

This is my favourite from December 31, 1960. By then the Dare strip was being drawn by Bruce Cornwall and Don Harley with story credits going to Eric Eden.   I like the ship design for the 'Martain Queen' freighter which, in my opinion wouldn't look out of place as a SWORD craft.

Happy New Year, folks

MOON BUS LUNAR TRANSPORTER CONVOY

After posting the Midori Lunar Transporter box art the other day I noticed it had the same angle as the Moon Bus at the back of the Project SWORD Annual. Here's my poor attempt to merge the two illustrations. See what you think.

HARD-FOILED: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SWORD SARGE SABRE

Sergeant Sabre was a craggy old space grunt who people avoided like the plague. Known simply as Sarge, he'd spent forty long grizzled years piloting rum-filled rust-buckets round the System to pay for his drink and skin.

During his sodden life he'd managed to hack-off all the top brass at the SWORD Academy and his few ancient friends had long given up on him as an oxygen thief. His crew hated his guts yet still held some grudging respect for his skill at the wheel. In truth, he was a total burn-out and the SWORD high hats wanted him gone and he knew it.

None of this mattered to Sarge though. They could all go hang. The only thing that bothered him was his Daughter. She hadn't spoken to him since she her Mother, beaten and spent, walked out taking her from his miserable life forever. That was ten years ago.

In Sarge's tiny midden of an apartment his morning alarm sounded like a smoker's dying cough and he cursed the thing's persistence. The old pilot rose from his sack slowly, one leg at a time over the edge. He felt like death. He groaned and rubbed his face like a boxer on the ropes. "Shit!". He lit a cig he'd cadged off a kid on the corner. Another feather in his cap. He didn't know it but this would be his last day on earth.

To be continued.

EAGLE SPACEPORT

As the cutaways are proving quite popular with some of you out there, I thought you might like to see these two scans featuring rocket launching in the futuristic world of Dan Dare.

This one showing a spaceport of the future from the 'Best of the Eagle 1950's Comic' book 2007.

And this one showing a Dan Dare launching pad taken from the Dan Dare Space Annual 1963

A SEASONAL SACK OF PROJECT SWORD COLLECTABLES

Well readers, the last of the turkey is drying out in the fridge and the stuffings gone hard. The Christmas hats are screwed up into balls and lie forlorn next to the growing herd of  empty beer bottles. Yes, Christmas is nearly over for another turn and the top of the year beckons like a waiting train.

But just in case you didn't get that fantastic project SWORD collectable you so dearly wanted on the big day, there are still some to be found from the comfort of your Christmas-warmed sofa.

Boxed Project SWORD toy vehicles continue to grace Ebay as they have done in one way or another all year. There's currently a smattering of Century 21 Task Forces, Dyna Soars and a loose Moon Ranger from the brief look I had this morning. No C21 SWORD toys are cheap nowadays [remember the Nuclear Ferry earlier in the summer!] but fortunately some are still commonplace and do turn up boxed and in good shape.

The best bargain has to be the Project SWORD Annual on Ebay UK at the mo at under a tenner. The Annual is cover to cover fabulous SWORD in glorious colour detail including some vehicles you'll never see anywhere else; the ANT, Sea Sword and the wondrous Moon Crawler. Alternatively for a nerve-shredding experience why not try hovering your finger over the Buy It Now button of an eye-wateringly priced copy of the Annual going for a ridiculous $600 or £363!

If you have THE Sword Annual then why not spend your Christmas money on the 'other' SWORD Annual, the TV21 Annual 1969 with Captain Scarlet on the blue cover. The SWORD story The Loyal and the Dead is worth a tenner in itself. There's usually one or two Amazon or Ebay.

For Hong Kong T in a Circle or Tai Hing SWORD collectors there's always at least one T Moon Prospector on Ebay Germany. A quick look's confirmed it. American Tarheel SWORD is harder to find but a relative of theirs has been languishing on Ebay US all year, a loose green NOVA II spaceship for $85. Its the larger version of the Spacex Hawk.

Speaking of Spacex - and Golden Astronaut - there's a squadron of loose and carded vehicles on Ebay at the mo, together with a few Apollo Moon Exploring. For deeper pockets there's still a boxed Apollo Moon Exploration set by Hippo Toys. If you're a fan of the Spacex Cricket, in all its exotic forms, then you might like the large Jeep version by Molto of Spain. A quick check and there's one on Todocollecion.

For an original SWORD collectable from Japan, which won't require a second mortgage, you can't do better than a bag of UFO rubbers by Takeuchi. All authentic miniature rubber SWORD vehicles, they come complete with a fab picture backing card. I love these sets and have collected different colour mixes for the past few years. Scanning Noppin reveals a bag on auction at a starting price of 500 Japanese Yen.

My own SWORD wish, as yet unfulfilled by the big red guy with a beard, is a wall canvas of one of my favourite SWORD vehicles, the Moon Crawler. The canvas depicts the vehicle in its original form as created by the US John Schoenherr in 1962. It is available via the US magazine whom he worked for, Analog, priced $35.

Finally, should you be a fan of the sort of space art, which may have influenced Project SWORD, then not wanting to blow my own trumpet, I've written a book on the subject. Containing lots of information about 1950's and 60's space and sci-fi art and comparisons to SWORD box art, together with loads of colour pictures, its a jolly good read if I say so myself! Published privately through Blurb, if you're interested then please do let me know.

Right, time for a mince pie before the last ones disappear!

BEST OF EAGLE SPACESHIP CUTAWAY

At the suggestion of Andy B I've dug out my old copy of 'The Best of Eagle', published in 1977 and edited by Marcus Morris.

This is the Eagle Space Ship cutaway drawn by Leslie Ashwell Wood which Andy mentioned...

... and this little Xmas bonus strip drawn by Frank Hampson which was reprinted  from Eagle, 24th December 1954.

To me, though, the best Eagle cutaway is of Dan Dare's personal spaceship, Anastasia, uncredited but probably drawn by Eric Eden, which I previously posted in May of this year.

FLYING WING CUTAWAY

Another dip into the 'Best of the 1950's Eagle Comic'. This time a cutaway of a futuristic Flying Wing airliner and drawn by legendary cutaway artist, Leslie Ashwell Wood.

For anyone interested in tracking down this nostalgic publication, it was published in 2007 by Orion Books and edited by Daniel Tatarsky.

DAN DARE TOY ADVERT

My brother, knowing that Dan Dare was one of my  interests, found a' Best of the Eagle' book and gave it me as a stocking filler.

Its full of oldl Eagle comic snippets including advertisements which appeared in the comic during the 1950's.

This one intrigued me as I don't recall ever coming across the Dan Dare rubber ring, and the descriptions of the other two items, the compass which points to the Extra-Terrestrial North or the Cosmic Ray Gun which penetrates not just black, but the blackest black, sound a tad dubious to me.

What do you think?

DAN DARE AT CHRISTMAS

A number of years back Hawk books complied a series of lavish collectable editions featuring  a complete year or so of vintage Dan Dare Eagle comic reprints.

Each year at Christmas time I would receive one of those books in my stocking, and even though Hawk books have long since ceased this tradition I still feel an association with Dan Dare and Christmas.

I suppose considering the Eagle comic's strong Christian morals I think that's quite apt.

So for any Dan Dare fans out there this Christmas Eve, who maybe feel the same as me here's a seasonal Dan Dare strip story taken from the 1955 Eagle Annual No. 5.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Dateline 3033: Special Mission

Bill Jansons fingers gripped the metal edge of the portal as he gazed into the deep lunar night. Around him, SWORD technical operatives watched their screens and readouts, intent on their individual tasks.

The atmosphere in the small room was tense; no-one was speaking apart from the incessant chatter of computers and readouts, relaying details to their operators. Each face was lit by a surreal pastel glow in the dim light. Just then, the door opened and Marius Hickman, one of SWORDs top scientists, stepped in. Behind his large archaic spectacles, he blinked, adjusting to the restrained light.

After a few seconds, he approached Janson.

“Bill, what’s going on?”  He asked quietly. Janson didn’t react, continuing to stare out across the maré.

“Bill?”

He touched the commander’s shoulder and he slowly turned, as if he had only just become aware of his visitor.

“Sorry Marius, didn’t realise you were back”.

He looked solemn and still slightly distracted. Hickman stepped back as Janson pressed past him, making to leave the cramped confines of the room. As he touched the door switch, Hickman followed him, speaking to his retreating back.

“I’ve only just stepped off the transporter. I almost didn’t make it home!”

Janson paused briefly in the outer corridor, looking at his wrist chrono.

“Problems Earthside again?" He asked absently.

Hickman was becoming agitated and gripped his arm, turning him bodily so that he had his full attention.

“Problems? I ran into a blockade leaving Earth, seems that lunar space is a now a no-fly zone!”
Janson exhaled deeply.

“Ah, sorry Marius, that was my directive. I’ve got a bit of a situation to handle”

He smiled wanly as if to mollify Hickman, but he wasn’t in the mood to be assuaged so easily.

“A situation ? What could be so important that you throw a ring of steel around the Moon, even keeping your own personnel away ?”

Janson put his arm around Hickmans shoulder and led him further down the corridor.

“Come” He muttered.

As they moved down the corrugated corridor towards the main hub of the moonbase, hurried footsteps pursued them.

“Commander!”

It was Captain Malone, the man responsible for enforcing the no-fly zone. Hickman and Janson turned to meet him, Hickman eyed the man warily.

“Commander, we’ve just had report that a pair of Probe Force Three have been hijacked outside Woomera Base!”

Malones grizzled features were drawn with tension. He handed Janson a datapad and stood waiting for a response.

“Casuals ?” Asked Hickman.

Malone avoided his gaze and spoke through gritted teeth.

“It looks like it’s the work of Casuals, but it seems they may have had help from Reject sympathisers”.

“An inside job.”

Janson tapped the pad, examining the resultant data carefully. Malone waited patiently, his impatience evident. Eventually Janson looked up.

“Have the insurgents been dealt with ?”

His expression was impassive. Malone quickly explained that although the two heavily armed ships had escaped, the people responsible for the hijack had been detained. Janson handed him the datapad

“Have you detonated the failsafe ?” Asked Hickman. Malone shook his head.

“Seems the remote destruction was circumvented, they clearly knew what they were doing. We can’t touch them”

Janson sighed.

“So, have they left Earth atmosphere yet ? Are they likely to head for Luna ?”

Malone checked the data once more. Tersely flicking through tabs of information on screen.

“Theres been no reports of sublight traffic in Earth orbit, if they were heading here, we’d see them. It’s a strong probability that they will try to hide them on a larger freighter, piggyback to Luna, or maybe Mars.”

He left the last statement hang in the air, heavy with import.

“Mars will be at closest approach within 12 hours and I’ve got 3 Booster Rockets waiting to evac personnel to Cydonia Base. That’s no secret, the mission has been in preparation for months. I’ve got over 2000 SWORD operatives and their families to relocate, If those ships are delayed, we have a major problem.”

Janson rubbed his jaw thoughtfully.

“Well you have that blockade in place” Hickman began.

“True, but that is designed to screen out a concerted attack, not two small, fast highly manoeverable interceptors.”

Malone hadn’t moved, his steely gaze fixed on the commander.

“Your orders sir ?”

Janson considered for a moment.

“Step up Probe Force orbital surveillance and contact SWORD HQ at London for a situation update. Tighten the net.”

Malone nodded and turned to leave.

“Malone!” Janson snapped.  “Yes sir?”

“Keep a close watch, but keep your hand off the trigger until I say so. Ok ?”

The two men’s eyes met and for a second, Malone seemed about to say something. Instead, he turned and headed swiftly back to the control room. Janson walked quickly away and once more, Hickman found himself dashing to keep up with the big man.

“He’s a good officer and the best pilot I have. But I think driving a desk up here is not doing him any favours”

Once more Janson seemed to be at a far remove. Hickman drew level with him.

“Did you anticipate the hijack, Bill ?”

They had reached a viewport above the large circular expanse of the moonbase hub. Below them was a hive of activity, with technicians and scientists running to and fro, busily tending to a multitude of separate tasks. In a large cordoned area in the centre of the hub was a temporary staging area and within it were the SWORD personnel awaiting their opportunity to leave Moonbase and start a new life on Mars. Among the adults were throngs of small children and toddlers and more than a few nursing mothers. These families would be among the first of a new wave of colonists destined to carve a new life from the red crust of Mars.

Janson stood and surveyed the scene. When he spoke it was with a tinge of emotion in his voice.

“We take risk for granted Marius. Every time we set foot on a ship or take out a Scramble Bug, we know it could be our last trip. But that’s what we do, we are humanity’s last chance. These people are scientists, farmers, engineers, botanists, teachers – but above all they are human. They’re scared, they’re running on adrenalin and they are faced with the greatest challenge of all. I could be sending them to their deaths.”

Hickman had known Janson for many years, working closely with him on many dangerous missions in the most hostile of territories. In all that time, he had never seen him falter or shy away from the toughest of decisions. It was strange to see him so reticent now.

He patted his friend on the shoulder and muttered a few words which he hoped would be of some small comfort.

“Bill, they are in the best of hands. I’m sure there’s nothing else you can do for them”

Janson turned from his contemplation of the colonists and regarded Hickman with a wry smile. For a second, the flinty edge had returned to his gaze.

“Marius, you’d be surprised.” He quickly checked his wrist chrono. “What date is it ?”

Hickman looked askance. “erm 24th December 3033, why ?”

Jansons smile broadened slightly. “And ?”

But the significance seemed to evade Hickman.

“We have a multitude of different races, creeds, faiths, religions and cultures all crammed together in a makeshift temporary home, waiting to be shipped out into the unknown. Most of them have either lost or had to abandon everything. SWORD is doing its best to find them a new home, a new life, but meanwhile, there are children down there and all they have known in their short life is disaster and dismay. Tomorrow, the ships leave for Mars. I aim to make sure that they have a little hope and a maybe a little magic to take with them. A little piece of Old Earth”

Suddenly, the realisation dawned on Hickman and the significance of the date became clear.

“Christmas ?” He said smiling. “But no-ones celebrated it for decades!”

Janson was grinning broadly now and striding toward a repeater console set into the wall, He keyed in a command and awaited a response. Shortly with a hiss of static, a voice broke the silence.

“Nuclear Ferry Thor awaiting instructions Commander”

Janson leaned closer to the voder and spoke into the pickup.

“Is the cargo safe and secure as requested ?”

“Yes sir, the hold is full of the special supplies as per your instructions. We are approaching the perimeter now. Awaiting landing clearance”

The voice was tinny and remote, but Hickman could sense a certain warmth and almost excitement. Janson smiled.

“Excellent, landing access code is X-Ray, Mike, Alpha, Sierra. Bring her in Johnson!”

He turned from the pickup and looked at Hickman.

“what’s going on ?”

Now seemingly more himself, Janson became much more voluble.
“You recall that last survey run we did near the Canadian Rockies?”

Hickman nodded his assent.

“Well while the team were scouting for useable materials, they discovered a large section of city which had evaded devastation. It was too remote to have been scavenged and stripped by the casuals, so most of the buildings were intact. I sent a secondary recon team down there a few weeks ago, to see if there was anything recoverable and they discovered a vast distribution warehouse below ground level. They found all manner of retail and luxury goods. I’ve had a team go in and fill the cargo hold of a Ferry with as many creature comforts that a family would need for a long trip. If the top brass find out I’ve squandered valuable research and evacuation resources on a Christmas shopping trip, they’ll have my head. But at least I’ll be able to make the journey for those people down there a little less harrowing.”

Hickman smiled as he saw his friend in a new light.

“Well" he said rubbing his hands together.

“We’d better get down to the landing pad, looks like we have some gifts to deliver!”

Together the two men headed off down the ramp, intent on making the next twelve hours as memorable as possible for the waiting colonists.

SWORD AT XMAS: APOLLO SATURN, OXFORD STREET, LONDON 1964

Well readers, its nearly the big day. I'm away from Moonbase on shoreleave in Europe but thinking of my Moonbase friends at Christmas.

It might be Christmas Eve but there's still time to get a last minute prezzy for someone especially of you have a time machine! Why not nip back to Oxford Street, London, Christmas 1964, where you'll find a SWORD Apollo Saturn in a shop. This version of the Rocket was either the Japanese Tomy version or the American Sears version and was apparently sold in the UK. It appears unboxed at 1.02 minutes for a few seconds along with a working Dux Astroman robot!

This clip pushes back the date for the earliest known sighting of an Apollo Saturn Rocket by a good six months from June 1965 [reader Jim's TV21 ad] to December 1964. Source: British Pathe.

GREETINGS FROM THE ZEROIDS

HAPPY XMAS READERS, FROM US ALL ON THE PLANET ZERO

Japanese Science Magazine "Adult Plamo" 1972 limited IMAI Kagaku VOL.1.

Nuclear Ferry seller Nassau San recently sold this cool box magazine on Ebay. It was described as "Rare Japan science magazine "Adult Plamo" reissue 1972 limited IMAI Kagaku Tracy Brother Thunderbird Model SF Roman Album Booklet set VOL.1"

Only the Japanese could produce such a sumptuous idea - a model kit inside a box magazine! Fab. It says its Volume 1. Just imagine if there is a volume covering the Imai Thunderbird 7 aka Project SWORD Beetle! Wouldn't that be a Christmas prezzie! We can live in hope!

NB. Note the old Imai catalogue with Zero X on the cover.

PROJECT SWORD'S PROBE FORCE 1 ORIGIN?

There's a great similarity between these two super jets on the cover of Popular Mechanics November 1959 and Project SWORD's Probe Force 1 from 1967. What do you think readers?

You can read the whole brilliant article on super jets in this issue of Popular Mechanics courtesy of Google Books [p.128 onwards] here.

CORGI CAPTAIN SCARLET REPEAT

Some more revisited snaps from my photo archive - this time some pictures of the Corgi  die-cast classic Captain Scarlet vehicles which came out to complement the New Captain Scarlet series vehicles in 2006

This set seems to have been largely overlooked by some of you so for those who don't recall them here they are.

As can be seen in this first photo they comprise of  a Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, an Angel Interceptor and a Spectrum Saloon Car. The Angel Interceptor is sadly not in scale with the other two vehicles and has a fixed forward landing leg, but it's still a nice addition to the set.

The detail is excellent on all the models, although the S.S.C. is conspicuously missing it's aerial . It does, however have opening doors and a figure of Captain Scarlet at the wheel. which wasn't a feature on the Dinky version.

The S.P.V. which is the jewel in Corgi's classic Scarlet crown, is a smashing representation of it's TV counterpart. As with the S.S.C. most collectors will compare it to the classic Dinky version. While the Dinky one will always be the most desirable, the Corgi example does look better.

Although, it's fair to say, like the earlier die cast toy release by Vivid it does take its cue from Dinky with the forward missile launcher and the side opening hatch. But its the detail that Corgi have applied that gives it the edge for me.

It's a pity Corgi didn't release a few more Captain Scarlet vehicles. A nicely detailed version of the Maximum Security Vehicle obviously springs to mind, painted in the right colour this time.

Health, Wealth & Happiness from Wotan

Here we are at the tail end of the year already, Xmas approaching fast. Before it does, i'd like to thank everyone for their support, encouragement, comments and submissions. It's been another memorable twelve months and i'm excited at the prospect of 2014, which I feel will be even better.

So I'd like to extend my special thanks to the following: To Bill Everatt and Celtica Radio for having the vision and generosity to take on novice presenters and give me and Woodsy our own radio show, to Dave Carrington for preparing my story scripts into something wonderful and atmospheric, to Ken Holt for being kind enough to tolerate my pestering and demands for info so graciously, to Kevin Davies for his outstanding Spacex models, to Ed, Arto, Andy and Paul V for the endless support and encouragement and a special thanks to Will 'Rocketpunch' Schwarz for showing me and Woodsy how to podcast in style!

And last but not least a huge thanks to Scoop for the stunning dioramas, barside entertainment and encyclopaedic Anderson knowledge and good old Woodsy for all his poetic support and literate encouragement and for just generally being Woodsy. They broke the mould with you mate.

So, until New Year and all that.... Amen and Out, Bill
