Come and have a go if you think youre hard enough! Wotan and Toad are deep in a play by mail game of Mystic Wood, a dice rolling, turn based RPG. At the moment its a test to see if the framework of the fantasy game will support a Project SWORD themed space game. All indications so far are that it will comfortably work being played over email and at a distance. The original game is card based and plays out into a map made up of the cards as the game unfolds.
At the moment we're just playtesting for fun, but we would like to see how practical it would be with other players. Do we have any takers ?

Who wants to play at Cowboys and Indians? No gorls allowed? Oh except Toadster!
Hee hee. Count me in but I have to warn you that I'm useless at playing games and have been booted out of family games!
No one plays board games with me, 'cept Wote cos I'm so naff at them.
But woodsy, there is such a lot of luck involved with this game. Yes, some scope for strategic thinking. But it's a lot more relaxed than some games I've tried playing.
And to repeat for anyone even vaguely interested: you don't need to own a copy of the game, or own the rules, or even read the rules. All it will take is a few simple decisions which you send by email. And, depending on how many want to play (7 tops, if we use the expansion set - which I have, thanks to Woodsy), you might only have to send moves each 2 or 3 days. So it's very little effort for potentially a lot of fun.
'less you're a scaredy cat ....
Let me give you an idea of what a typical move would be.
Imagine it's your turn. You send an email indicating which direction you want to take (North, South, East or West).
On some moves that will be ALL you have to do.
But sometimes you will get an email back asking, "do you want to fight the Dragon?". And you reply saying Yes or No.
Could hardly be simpler!
Take a risk, eh? Have some fun.
Dragon is just an example. There are other creatures you might meet in the course of the game. But the moves are NEVER more complicated than that.
OK the Helsinki Base is on! But fair warning, we've got our share of woods, and we're not out of the woods yet (excuse the pun, quite intended :)
and I'm named after a Woods! So am I in the Woods or is the Woods in me? Mystical!
Can I have some of whatever it is you're taking please, Woodsy!!!
Yay! Greetings there, Helsinki Base! welcome to the game ... despite the pun (giggles)
Anyone else brave enough to step forward?
What I'm on? A Chicken and Prawn Jalfrezi and a bottle of Duvel Toad!
and just to add - its great fun, Dungeon Mistress takes care of all the hard work, so all I have to do to play is consider which way to move in the wood! The rest is down to the throw of a die. Theres also a tremendously nostalgic feel to the game, like stepping back twenty years before the advent of those nasty video game thingys!
They made an expansion pack for Mystic Wood. I do have it but I'm struggling to remember what was in it because I mixed the cards in with the main game about 20 years ago!
Yep, I have it (see 2nd comment from top).
Can give you list of what was in it if you want.
Thanks, I'd be curious to know. Did they ever do more expansion packs I wonder?
Here's a link to the map tiles for the expansion set:
http://tinyurl.com/cc7acml
The "small cards" are: (2 Knights) Astolfo, Marfisa ... (denizens) Bear, Crone, Friar, Griffin, Immortal, Nymph, Ogre, Pilgrim, Sorcerer, Sphinx, Tartar, Tyrant, Wife, and Unicorn.
There was just this one expansion set, as far as I can tell. But if you look at the entry for Mystic Wood at Board Game Geek you will see that some people make their own "small cards", adding new Knights and denizens.
A previous owner of my 2nd-hand set used two of the three blank cards to make her (or his) own cards. They are included with the map tiles @ the link above.
