Lolly Gobble Choc Bomb

Just the thing for the late Summer Bank Holiday. My mate gave me a Dracula lolly the other day from his freezer. Wow! That took me back! I remember Wall's Dracula lollies from the Seventies - full of red goo! In fact the Sixties and Seventies were one long lolly-fest: Heart, Happy Faces, Kinky, Fab, Mivvi, Split, Screwball. Lolly Gobble Choc Bomb and the Thunderbirdesque Sky Ray. I found this old clip on YouTube of the Sky Ray - I don't recall the Dr.Who connection though. It must be the same for Eighties, Nineties and naughties kids with their 'own' lollies. I'm sure there were other lollies back in the 60's/70's but what were they called?

Lyons Maid Zoom was the first space ship shaped lolly I remember. It gave away Space Exploration cards for a time, and later other sets. I think Sky Ray was Walls answer to Zoom.

Sky Ray Rocket is the one I remember best. There was that wonderful Doctor Who picture card album, with the cut-away of the Sky Ray Rocket ship, and the Doctor Who story where the second Doctor beats the Daleks with the aid of giant beetle-like creatures.

But my actual favourites were FAB, and one called TOP TEN. The latter was a bit more expensive than other ices of the time, so it was a rarity. But, oh boy, it was heavenly! I can still remember them now!

Oh, and there was a brief-lived subtly minted choc ice called something like, "Choc Nice". Anyone remember those?

I remember the Lyons Maid Zoom. I think it had rocket fins and I would always bite those off first!

We used to get so called "Cider Lollies" too and would pretend to be drunk after sucking them. They were pretty cheap as I remember and you could soon turn them to watery ice if you sucked all the "cider" out!

Lollies like "Happy Face" (I thought they were called "Funny Face") and "Heart" were a bit expensive for your everyday lollie, only had them very rarely.

Sometimes when Mr Softy came round I would forgo a lollie altogether and get a packet of Chipmunk Crisps off him instead.

Ah, Chipmunk Oxo Crisps were delicious...our ice cream man used to sell them from his van but we could never find them in the shops where we lived.

Here's a fun picture on a fun blog of old crisps/snacks. The Chipmunk Crisps are in the bottom left hand corner.
Gets a bit bigger if you click on it.

Now that we're well off topic, who remembers Bandit, came with the milkman, looked like a Kit-Kat but was better, had a chewy layer and a Mexican Bandit'o supporting the Ads.?
